Conversations about fire safety in the United States should begin by asking, “Why is our fire fatality rate so much higher than in many other nations, including many nations that allow single buildings?”

If our codes are good, why do they deliver bad results?
If I organized conference sessions, webinars and meetings on the following topic, would you want to be part of one?

FIXING AMERICA’S BROKEN CODES: When it comes to safety and affordability, the US isn’t doing well. Our fire and traffic death rates are far higher than in many other nations.🧵

Where we stand, in long arc of history:

-Story on left, adding race as a factor when that favors white people.

-Story on right, banning race as a factor when that favors non-whites.

I often complain about NYT headlines and story-play. But these are strong. Including "If Court Guts 1965 Law."

I really appreciated this thoughtful piece about Ta-Nehisi Coates & Ezra Klein. Andrea Pitzer says “lost” folks like Klein “don’t have a clear idea how this moment fits into history and what it is exactly that they’re doing”. [degenerateart.beehiiv.com]
You don’t have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don’t know what your core beliefs are, you’re going to get played.

Bring back the Big Dig?
Blue cities should tear up the roads in front of ICE facilities and then start decades of community engagement and input sessions to rebuild them. Let's harness our core competencies.

Watching all these centrist pundits stress the “civility” of Charlie Kirk’s style without addressing the ugliness of his substance is giving me a renewed appreciation of how the civil, polite White Citizens’ Councils conned the same crowd into thinking they were distinct from the cruder Klan.

So it's fine to suggest murdering homeless people but not to be honest about Charlie Kirk's legacy? Good lord.
Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

This idiot...man, I don't know.
Trump: "Vladimir Putin said something- one of the most interesting things. He said 'your election was rigged because you have mail in voting. It's impossible to have mail in voting & have honest elections.' He said that to me because we talked about 2020. He said, 'you won that election by so much'"

All of this.
Have a ton of thoughts as a YIMBY who’s also a teacher:
1. I don’t want my housing attached to my job
2. Teachers aren’t “worthier” than a delivery worker/secretary
3. Teachers are median wage earners and when they can’t afford market homes, it’s the canary in the coal mine for your housing market!

Starving innocents, assassinating journalists and aid workers...this is not "defense", Israel. These are war crimes, and they are alienating allies and fueling global anti-semitism.

I want to do a 🧵 about the Sidney Sweeney thing, because it's *extremely* revealing & educational.

First, to be clear: I could not give less of a shit about the details -- the ad, the rhetoric, the jeans, her boobs, whatever. Good lord, who cares.

Let's look at the *structure* of the episode.

Beginning in the 1960s, American cities enacted sweeping zoning changes that made it much harder to build new dense housing.

As the white flight era ended and middle class professionals returned to living in cities, these policies have fueled displacement by making housing into a zero sum game.
maybe I’ll get pilloried for like “not getting the joke” or whatever, but this is absolutely how, like, a comfortable percentage of Cool People think the dynamics of housing costs work and it fucking sucks
