so much more was to come from
the NCES longitudinal studies, especially high school which has been a mainstay since the 1970s.

HS&B:22 was planned to follow students through 12th grade and after, through postsecondary and career transitions.

TONIGHT — Just after 8:30pm tonight, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker shared that the Texas National Guard is being deployed to Chicago.

“This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States.”
CHICAGO – Today, Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement after the Illinois National Guard was informed that the Texas National Guard is preparing deployments to Illinois:

“This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

“We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

“I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate. There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation.

“The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness."

FAA has issued MASSIVE temporary flight restriction which prohibits drones (i.e., photography) over Chicago.

They did similar around federal buildings in Los Angeles since June protests, but really no comparison...

Chicago's TFR covers 900x more area than ones in LA! 🧵👇

In the past 4 weeks in Chicago, ICE/CBP have snatched hundreds of people off the streets & homes, shot & killed a single-father in his car, smashed & abandoned countless cars, and deployed chemical munitions at protesters, journalists, & now on public streets. Today they cuffed an alderperson.

By my read, the only way for a university to comply with this compact is to gut their social sciences, arts, and humanities, and a good chunk of their sciences, too.

I just left my last Blaine Elementary LSC meeting. It is important for me to work locally in addition to federally, and I’m so proud to have served as a community member for the past three years. I learned so much from the dedicated parents, teachers, principal, and student reps. #weareblaine

1. RIF’d almost *all* of NCES
2. Relied on other departments to get new NAEP release out - and it was still late (due June/July) [transfer of function]
3. McMahon approved waivers for 8+ positions to meet Congressional mandates for 2026 & 2028. Positions posted match those whom were RIF’d

The House FY26 budget bill for ED (which still would exist) eliminates work-study, SEOG, and adult education funds, flat funds TRIO and GEAR UP, and includes a bunch of policy riders on culture war items.

Expect a series of continuing resolutions and possibly a government shutdown before December.

Proudly part of the CD-ROM era 😂
I remember the collective excitement of getting new NCES restricted-use data for our secure data room at Notre Dame. I also received CDs of ED’s public-use Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) for my dissertation - which I might still have, somewhere

🚨 Major shake-up in NSF funding for K-12 STEM ed:

Caps proposals at $750K max for 3 years. Prior cap used to be $5M up to 5 years for some programs.

Archives several existing programs (DRK-12, AISL, CSforAll, TD, parts of ECR:Core). Combines into broad program with much lower expected # of awards.

grief. my former colleagues and I have talked about it a lot: the loss of our jobs, questions about the futures our careers, short- and long-term impacts on public education. what will be rebuilt and how can it best be reimagined?

grateful for @jillbarshay.bsky.social’s continued coverage. as I wrote last week, this process usually takes longer to include much-needed stakeholder input and training. combined with the lack of question detail ED provided, data quality will take a big, big hit.

A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵

An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 “blast-proof” windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.
