New essay now online: "EATING THE FUTURE: The Metabolic Logic of AI Slop."
AI consumes planetary resources and excretes slop, polluting environmental & information ecologies. It's a new metabolic rift - disrupting the cycles that sustain both humans and AI alike.

Intensification - Kate Crawford - Eating the Future: The Metabolic Logic of AI Slop
AI slop isn’t invested in the order of events or even looking like reality. The slop is not the territory: it just smothers it in synthetic goop. It’s flooding the zone with AI shit.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia:
doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity.
1/n
Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues. Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms
are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe. Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles

What if scientists hadn’t waited until this point to speak about politics

Every time I see a headline like this, my brain just shouts

Like what if scientists hadn’t sat around silently watching everyone around them get attacked

Maybe the fight on campus would have gone differently

"Tao is one of the most prominent mathematicians and academics to publicly oppose the administration’s actions, calling them an “existential threat” to his field, and academic science, more broadly. He said public advocacy is a priority over his research, for now."

The 'Mozart of Math' rarely speaks about politics. The wide-ranging cuts to science funding made him change that.
UCLA's Terence Tao called the Trump administration's actions an "existential threat" to academic research in the U.S.

Sameer Project's daily updates tell us all we need to know about how Palestinians continue to fight for their existence and dignity in this genocide.

Dr. Al-Farra at Nasser Hospital Pediatric ICU continues to save the lives of babies.
1 can Ensure = $28.25

Donate: chuffed.org/project/1368...
Provide formula for babies: https://chuffed.org/project/136892-medical-campaign-x-sameer-project. The Nasser Hospital Pediatric ICU in Khan Younis treats the most critically injured and sick children. The Nasser Hospital Pediatric Department cares for chronically ill inpatients that need extended stay. As the South’s largest hospital, you would think Nasser Hospital has support to do the impossible, despite the obstacles, and keep these babies and children alive. But just like every other sector in Gaza, the medical system is lacking in support and ability to function.

Dr. Al-Farra bravely cares for Gaza’s most vulnerable. Babies, toddlers, and children who are sick and injured. But he lacks the necessary tools and support to treat them. Just yesterday, The Sameer Project made a delivery to Dr. Al-Farra and Nasser Hospital.

Correction (higher quantity + lower commission): We provided 148 cans of Ensure (high calorie meal supplements) or formula, and 41 cans of lactose free formula - all specialty and therapeutic nutritional support. The 119 cans cost $28.25 each, while the lactose free was $39.30, making the whole distribution come out to be $5,792 after 7% bank transfer fees.

I really don't post because I'm not at all good at posting and I don't think it does me or anyone else any good. But I've got several projects piling up (thanks to the fascist assault on science and higher education) and I'm procrastinating.

The abundance clown show suffers the same self-imposed blindness to capitalist labor and the contradictions that drive capital. The historical moment of US ascension to capital's center and the short-lived concentration of wealth and political power that came as a result has had a profoundly

All to avoid asserting the necessity of human labor for capital's self-reproduction. A self-imposed misrecognition that replaces immediate disintegration for the gradual disintegration of humanity through the fascist imposition of LLMs. All these fascists bound to lose, but then what?
kellyjnielsen.bsky.social
The contemporary idiot personifications of capital cannot articulate this (I hesitate to say that they do not understand it). The intolerable idea that humanity should be destroyed by a nuclear holocaust is only side-stepped by the AI delusion and planetary escape fantasies.

the nightmare of the neutron-bomb holocaust would certainly come true. But since such ‘final solution’ is denied to capital, we are confronted with the dehumanizing consequences of its contradictions and with the growing crisis of the system of domination.” István Mészáros, 1995

If capital is confronting a truly structural crisis and fascism is a doomed non-solution, it's very hard to imagine what's next other than flailing violence. But the capital-labor relation is the point at which imagination must ultimately arrive at; labor solidarity and radical labor action.
kellyjnielsen.bsky.social
But if capital is truly in a structural crisis and fascism can only be a temporary response, what comes next? Mészáros talks about a socialist offensive (which I'm only just getting to) but that means ending the subordination of labor, which has been the insuperable challenge from the beginning.
