A bit of serendipity this morning - didn’t feel safe going out in the car so went to the canal instead and saw this. My comedy moment for the year 🦢🤪

Tides coming in a foot above the prediction is kind of a big deal. But for sailors who have run aground, it's a blessing.

When dampness and mold create abstract art ... or something. Found some old family 35 mm slides in a wet corner of my shop, where they had been for years. I have no idea what the subject was, and I don't think it matters anymore.

'Dunluce Castle In Golden Light'

Majestic conditions at Dunluce Castle, when the last light of the day illuminated the iconic landmark perched on the edge of the cliff. A dramatic sky above with a half moon as I got extremely lucky.

This was the present California wanted. We must have been nice. Left: Christmas eve; right Boxing Day.

Already in a doctor's office near you. Scary, since it fails the specialty boards, according to external testing. I checked against my own area of expertise, and it wrote naive summaries like an enthusiastic undergrad would. How would we know if our doctors are using it in our care? We wouldn't.

Incoming Pacific system caught in the act of pushing out the tule fog in the Central Valley. Good riddance, I say! The view is looking SE over the bottom of the Berryessa Gap, where Putah Creek breaks out of the Coast Range. The weather station in view is KCAWINTE11 on Weather Underground.

Kingfishers were my nemesis bird for a long time. Then I went to South Africa and captured several, including this woodland kingfisher dangling a scorpion in the dusk at Sabi Sand Reserve. (I still don't have a decent belted kingfisher from home, working on it.)

More good news that I had vaguely known about, but had not seen the numbers for. This is the ultimate reason the California power grid has so many batteries. The future is coming fast, and it looks like its speed has room to increase.

What a beautiful painting from @helenbennett.bsky.social 😍🥰
I’m somewhat nervous sharing this painting as I created it just after my mother passed away in July this year.

A ‘loose’ watercolour of a misty wood. As I watch on in the stillness I see a familiar figure drifting away to a peaceful place 🤍

Happy Friday everyone 🕊️

And... the tule fog is back again, after a couple of days off. It is not obvious, but this is a moonlight shot, taken at 2 AM.

More Florida stupidity: sink concrete cars, releasing tons of CO2, to raise awareness of reef damage from climate change. And the NYT photoshopping the yellowtail? Really?

A bubble coral shrimp (Hamopontonia physogrya).

This species is very small, typically less than 1 cm long. It is often found in bubble corals. The shrimp helps clean the corals of parasites and debris, while being provided with shelter in return.

U.S. 📻 played us the wrong Chumbawamba song!

🎶 The world is riddled with maggots;
the maggots are getting fat

They're making a tasty meal of the bosses & bureaucrats

They're taking over the boardrooms; they're fat & full of pride

& they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died 🎶

Living near the Central Valley in California, we've been under fog and low clouds for days. It's hammered our solar array's output, and I got to wondering about whether it was making much of a dent in the state's energy supply. Short answer: nope! Also notable: the bottom curve is batteries.
