I’m happy to share today’s editorial from the National Catholic Reporter, commending US bishops who are speaking out against the Tr*mp admin’s foreign policy and its treatment of immigrants here at home.
Editorial: The church speaks out. A new era has dawned.
It is a new level of opposition for American cardinals to formally question the fundamental morality of an administration's engagement with the world.

Trump has a ten-month plan to ensure further elections are impossible.

It's *not even halfway through January* and his paramilitary is occupying a city and killing protesters as he prepares to invoke the Insurrection Act and floats canceling elections.

Wake up: fascism is here.

I was in the midst of preparing a Morning Memo arguing that Minneapolis is shaping up to be the catalyzing moment that Trump was looking for to justify doing what he has wanted to do since his 1st term: invoke the Insurrection Act...when he posted exactly that:

And right on cue, Trump threatens to invoke the Insurrection Act. Trump and Stephen Miller are deliberately trying to cause the rule of law and civil order to collapse in Minnesota for a reason. This is that reason.

Instead of conducting an investigation into a homicide, Kash Patel orders the FBI to piece together claims that can be used to further defame and smear the victim. This is how fascist regimes operate.

Sanders: I am very worried that ICE is becoming a domestic army for Trump, and this goes way beyond the issue of immigration. It goes to the movement of this country toward authoritarianism and fear.

Wow. Genuinely shocked, and a hugely consequential decision.

Importantly, this is a case where @martylederman.bsky.social's amicus brief appears to have made a MAJOR impact. Before he wrote it, courts were sidestepping the "regular forces" issue entirely. And that's what the Trump admin lost on.
NEW: By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court blocks Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Chicago to assist immigration agents. A majority holds that he likely lacks authority to do so. Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

The US Supreme Court rejecting Trump's attempt to federalize the National Guard to do his bidding is very important. It means if Trump tries to send troops out right before the election to intimidate voters or to seize voting machines, the courts can quickly order that to be illegal.

Those opining that it could be fake are missing the point.

It was in Epstein's effects.

If it's fake, it was planted by Trump officials in a way tending to obscure cause of death.

If it's real, it is one of the most damning deathbed allegations ever made in American history.

Either is historic.

“Refusal to do so will confirm the widespread suspicion the DOJ’s actions to date are not about transparency, but about insinuation.”

If you're a staffer at 60 Minutes who worked on that CECOT segment that got yanked by Bari Weiss at the last minute, figure out a way to leak it. Not saying it's an easy decision or there won't be consequences, but ask yourself why you got into journalism in the first place.

Expect a "revolt" among 60 Minutes staff over Bari Weiss pulling the CECOT segment at the last minute, one network insider told me.

Another CBS News reporter added that a Rubicon had been crossed with this decision, which 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi called "political" and not editorial.
