78,9% of the electorate voted in the Norwegian parliamentary elections – highest turnout in my lifetime! Beautiful!

Such a nice piece to read while getting mentally prepared to pick up a paper in need of some heavy editing. Thanks for sharing! :)

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

How do challenger parties—those without prior governing experience—gain access to executive power? In our paper out now in @thejop.bsky.social, @mvinaes.bsky.social, @jacobnyrup.bsky.social, and I explore whether simply holding legislative office helps them join government. Brief 🧵👇

As Lise Rye and I show in this paper, debates about "where to wriggle" have been ongoing in Norway since the beginning of the association to the EU internal market and, as recent developments make clear, are not likely to go off the agenda anytime soon – happy to see this paper out!

Online first: "Where to wriggle? Norwegian politicians’ presentations of autonomy within the EEA association" by @kgraneng.bsky.social & Lise Rye

doi.org/10.1080/0140...

Part of the SI "External Differentiation: A New Trajectory after Brexit and Ukraine?"
Abstract of the article "Where to wriggle? Norwegian politicians’ presentations of autonomy within the EEA association" by Kristine Graneng and Lise Rye. Published online first in West European Politics. Figure 1, displaying Norwegian parties’ first preference on EU affiliation as expressed in public debates, 1989–2022. The parties are listed from right (top) to left (bottom). Table 1, providing an overview of the theoretical expectations of parties' presentations of a national wriggle room across the policy phases. Figure 2, displaying the share of documents in the NORWEU database containing keywords relating to ‘wriggle room’, by electoral period. N: 285. Note: Government platforms and party manifestos were excluded to limit the use of the term in debates not related to European affairs. There were no documents included in the covered data for the period 1989–1993.

New publication in European Union Politics!
Sina Özdemir, @pieterdewilde.bsky.social and I have examined how tweets by EU executives appeal to legitimacy beliefs – we find that they are more opinionated than we'd expected!

Thanks to the editors for putting this together! Also thanks to everyone who has provided input throughout the process, particularly to AMIS and the Saxo Institute at @ucph.bsky.social, who hosted me for a very rewarding research stay in the spring of 2022! 5/5

The referendum highlighted complexities in Danish relations to EU migration policy. This made the campaign a complicated affair, with a lot of debates about what the referendum was really about. The case thus illustrates some of the democratic challenges that come with the complexities of DI. 4/5

Migration has been linked to contestation of the EU in several recent referendums. This was also the case here, particularly with the Danish People's Party making such linkages. However, there was overall considerable debates about how and whether this was relevant for the referendum. 3/5

My chapter looks at the Danish referendum on the Justice and Home Affairs opt-out in 2015, asking what role migration played in the referendum campaign. The political majority tried to take migration off the agenda, but they were not successful in doing so. 2/5

Just received this in the mail! This edited volume looks into various cases of differentiated integration (DI) in the Nordic countries, and I contributed with a chapter based on my PhD project about discursive linkages of migration and European integration. 1/5

Lise Rye and I have made a database of political documents on Norwegian European policies in the period 1987-2022. It's available here: doi.org/10.18712/NSD...

I hope this can contribute to more studies on Norway-EU relations (which hasn't become any less relevant these last weeks).

On this note, here is a thread with recent research on what normalization is and how it happens.

It includes links to references, from my work and that of others.

I tried to tag the authors whenever they are on here, in case you are interested in following their work.

Seems like a good day to reshare this recent study that shows how mainstream parties can fuel the success of the radical right by opening the door to them

A friend of mine very rightly pointed out that I fit the target group for this joke perfectly. Now decorates my office door. If there are any other fellow Narnia-Brexit geeks on here, enjoy:
