When I was a TA, students often came to my office hours saying they didn't want to "bother" the professor, so I always put a section about office hours in my syllabi now that explains what they are, tells the students that I like seeing them, and suggests some things we can talk about.

Here is Jamal from Gaza whose family lost everything and he is trying with all his might to rebuild their lives and help them with the crazy costs in Gaza and travel outside Gaza when the crossings open. I hope you support us. Your little support, even if it is $5

Help Jamal’s family leave the war zone and rebuild their life!
Hi my loves! My name is Caroline, and I created this fundraiser to help Jamal support his family as they fight to survive the genocide in Gaza, evacuate to safety, and eventually rebuild their lives f...

They do make good first pets to care for. The fact that their digestion is so similar to ours really helps.

You know, sort of, but also the grief is intense in a different way. My family has been doing pet rats for kids for three generations and my kids are the ones who eventually told us they couldn't do it anymore.
khandozo.bsky.social
The way domesticated rats are prone to tumors and suchlike is very frustrating. The lab rat lineage is probably not helpful there.

Rats are the goodest. I just need someone to invent a rat who lives like ten years.

I recreated my Twitter eugenics 101 thread here, but I did it in quote posts before threading sort of worked so I’m not sure linking to it is useful.

Every nonhuman animal, every plant, every fungi is of far greater importance and in far greater need of protection than any chatbot.

Protect people. Fuck the cultists who think *potential* *digital* “people” are more important than the flesh and blood humans living and suffering today.

My dissertation was about dehumanizing language. You cannot dehumanize a machine because it’s not human. This is so obvious that I assume people pretending otherwise are largely malicious.
khandozo.bsky.social
Vagueposting because I’m not going to boost someone saying that being mean about AI is eugenics adjacent. No it’s not. Charlie Brown did not have hoes.
khandozo.bsky.social
Oh my god. You can’t do eugenics on a machine. There are two bad things that can come of normalizing the machine: dehumanizing HUMANS, and normalizing abusive behaviors, but the worry of normalizing abusive behaviors is also about humans! It’s bad if you practice abusing humans with the machine!

Do it now before you move on with your day and forget. It takes about three minutes total to call and leave a message.

It's always people my age, too, who remember her as a major touchpoint, and I just missed her existence entirely.

V.C. Andrews is my Mandela effect thing because I read so much as a kid and my mom was a librarian, so I spent tons of my time in libraries, and I never heard of her until I was an adult. Those weren't my sort of books, but neither were the Sweet Valley High books and I saw those all the time.

We used to, as a family, go to the library and check out Connections DVDs, and I should see if that's still something I can do. They're fun!

Just to make things clear, this might be the best-timed shot in science TV history. In the BBC series "Connections", James Burke points to a rocket just as it launches. It was filmed on August 20, 1977, during the launch of Voyager 2 spacecraft. 🧪🚀

Just saw a care home employee post a video of one of her charges dancing when she thought she was alone and care providers, you really need to…well, CARE about your patients’ privacy! My grandma would have been mortified.

Kids, elders, and disabled people aren’t your content.
