In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

What does a leaderboard of AI metrics really represent?
-degradation of the information environment
-continued ramping of climate consequences
-a history of eugenics
-stripping critical capacities from young people just as they most need it to combat the return of the far right

Us: AI is a wage depression technology, and the industrialization of language

Them: The median fine-tuning and inference cost of $81 per author represents a dramatic 99.7% reduction compared to typical professional writer compensation
Put writing high quality literary text on the list of things that AIs used to not be able to do but now can do

there are earlier uses of the concept “dark enlightenment” that have nothing to do with yarvin and land or their goofy monarchist white supremicist capitalist friendly “theories” that focus on a certain slice of western civilization at the behest of the rest of history.

AI companies like "our product will convince you to kill yourself, then monetize your spouse's grief with microtransactions while it also sexts with both them and your child. We lose billions of dollars a month btw"

And almost half the US stock market is now inextricably tied up in them.

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc

“I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. ... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’” 🫡
