Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

I know I’ve said this several dozen times, but right wing lunatics frankensteined together unrelated Bible verses to create “the antichrist” and a description of what he would look like, and then the guy fucking showed up and they love him.
I mean I'm a hardened atheist who at this point believes like 80% unironically that Trump is the/an antichrist, so...

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

When I talk about DOGE I say that every administration has to build the plane as it flies, but this is the first one that is yanking random parts from the engine and chucking them out of the cargo bay in mid-air.
Let this be the defining metaphor for his approach to government
We spent a while reporting on Davis's past and what motivates him on cost-cutting.

One noteworthy anecdote: Davis was so obsessed with cost-cutting that he removed key parts from SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket, directly causing its failure on its second ever test flight.

How it started:
We don’t need anything from Canada!

How it’s going:
• Wait, they’re our main source of aluminum?
• Oil too? Seriously?
• Potash? So farms need that?
• They spend billions in tourism?
• They make American cars?
• My house is basically Canadian?
• WTF, we rely on them for electricity?

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago.

They contain recognisable humanity, warmth and humour. Here's a thread of my favourites.

Eight months into the Trump presidency, I tried to explain why journalists tend to normalize him. pressthink.org/2017/09/norm... It's a very short post.

A conflict in the journalist's code was created by a president wholly unfit for the job.
