This is not a small US contention going in against a tiny population of Greenlanders. They would be fighting against groups from several of our NATO allies. Turning NATO on its head. There would no doubt be some bloodshed, and it would completely destroy the alliance. Putin would love it.
Yes, it should be obvious that it would be an illegal order. Plus, it could destroy much they've spent their careers building. I actually take the tariff threat today as an indication he is getting pushback against an invasion.

The soldiers are from the 11th Airborne Division, based at Joint Base Elmendorf--Richardson, one of the Army's premier infantry formations.

In 1916, the US was worried that Germany might take control of the Danish West Indies to use as a submarine base. So, Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to the USA, with the colony becoming the US Virgin Islands. In exchange, the USA acknowledged Denmark's complete sovereignty over Greenland.
