Russian colonialism. A long 🧵

Some didn´t get the memo but Russia was - and is - a colonial power.

Let´s take a tour around this marvelous empire:

(I merged two threads here. That´s why the Balts are more thoroughly pictured)

I have counted 34,943 Russian combatant deaths over the past 289 days since I began tracking. This number will increase, as I have not finished error-checking, and we typically undercount during the first pass through the data.

I don’t write earnest commentary on US politics very often. It's usually tongue in cheek or under layers and layers of very early internet culture references. Or reposts. It just feels strange, offering takes on a country that isn’t mine, a country that will always think of mine as post-something.

🇪🇺 "No deal will work without Europe, and Europe will continue to support Ukraine," says EU high representative Kaja Kallas.

"Quick decisions are dirty deals that won't stop the war. Concessions before talks are appeasement that won't work. If Ukraine resists, Europe will increase support."

1/ Over a thousand Russian soldiers who are sick, injured or refusing to fight are being held prisoner in a Siberian concentration camp. They are chained to their bunks, and denied medical treatment or hearings before they are sent to Ukraine to die en masse in 'meat wave' assaults. ⬇️

In today’s Vatnik Soup, I’ll introduce an Estonian politician, Jana Toom (@JanaToomEE). She’s best-known for promoting pro-Kremlin viewpoints both in domestic Estonian politics and in the European Parliament.

Aren’t they sick N tired? Today 8 BMD-2 from the third battalion of 234 VDV regiment again attacked our positions.

4 BMDs were taken out (one of them by my company).

I really do not understand the point of attacking at the place where they attack for the third month.

Just a reminder: buying fireworks for New Year's celebrations supports china, russia's biggest backer in its invasion of Ukraine. Instead of funding russia's enabler, consider using that money for aid to Ukraine instead. The @69thsb.bsky.social is a great option among many others

I was shocked to discover that oligarchs connected to the Russian mafia, who produce war machines for the war of conquest in Ukraine, have been left out of the EU sanctions.

Officials in Estonia told me that someone in the EU is blocking their sanctions.

Surprise, surprise, that someone is Orbán.

The cradle of the revolution, the birthplace of the anti-Assad uprising, Deraa, has been liberated by local militias.

A hugely symbolic moment for Syrians.

This is all so Putin-esque — saving al-Assad’s ass for a DECADE, spending gargantuan resources, applying mercenary armies, turning entire cities into piles of rubble, killing hundreds of thousands of people, and eventually getting all things royally fucked up within DAYS.

From this video of last night’s Russian it seems HIGHLY LIKELY that Russia did in fact use an RS-26 ICBM without a nuclear payload to strike Dnipro.

The video shows what appear to be MIRV impacts that are too simultaneous to be multiple independent ballistic missiles.
