That is actually what sold VCRs in the first place, and there is a lot of important history there when it comes to the legality of recording copyrighted content for personal use. Court cases and all!

I think it's important that we don't forget that history given how we don't get to own anything.

As whatever kind of technological historian I am, the reason it's important to me to keep the term VCR alive is that these devices could record TV shows.

Home video was not simply relegated to renting movies or purchasing your own tapes to build a library. You could record stuff from TV.

we should be building so much affordable housing in every california city so people can afford to not just move here but do it in dignity and not be dependent on making big money from tech or living with multiple people

oh and give queer people a ubi
As Californians, we should be prepared to receive over a million LGBTQ people moving here, and that is on top of other groups moving here for other reasons, whether it's to get away from racism, to find jobs, etc.

Getting more housing built quickly will be important.

seems conspicuous that programmer commentary on genAI is split between

"oh yeah i use claude all the time now. the 10× programmer is real and he's me. i am a god"

and

"yeah my coworkers use claude all the time. they keep committing crap that doesn't work and now i spend half my time fixing it"

you can always tell who’s got a student level understanding of coding by how impressive LLM generated code is to them
And CS is particularly bad: LLMs for programming have serious problems, but one thing they are great at is undergraduate programming assignments (because of how they operate and what they are trained on). So we can't allow students to use them. And its double so...
