The closest thing I know of to this is 'Cowboys vs. Aliens' where it's more like a guy just really wanted to make a movie... but Wild Wild West killed it and instead they had to spend years pushing a comic book unrelated to the eventual script.

There's some sketchy shit going on there, because it makes no goddamn sense that they acted like it was 'Voice of a Generation' novel when it was just them wanting to make a movie that used 'Every property we have rights for all at once'
