I'm Pilar Gutierrez. I am a former Mie JET and dispatch worker, and currently a direct hire. I'm currently undergoing my Ph.D. program at Sophia University researching the role and experiences of foreign language teachers in Japan. My study looks at how diversity, teaching practices, and internationalization are shaping our work in schools.

I'd love to hear from you-whether you're with JET, BOE, dispatch company, or direct hire teaching K-12. Your insights are invaluable in helping paint a fuller picture of what it means to be a foreign language teacher in Japan today.

Flier advertising to come for an オーラチェック体験会 (a session to get your 'aura' checked/tested). Aura is checked through some machine called オーラQ (Aura-Q) that supposedly reads the trace electric signals coming off of you to determine the state of your aura. This test is followed by a 60-minute yoga session to "rebalance your mind and body."

That Jeopardy skit on SNL with Bad Bunny was a metacommentary on immigrant/minority life: you have the capabilities, but you don’t get credit due to some random rule you don’t fully understand, and someone else seizes on your solutions and profits from them. Also, the condescension.
