As someone who was raised in Mississippi most of later half of life, you're right but, it's a very poor state. There is basically no money there except the coast and it's nearly impossible to move out once you're there because of that. Poor education breeds more poverty, it's a spiral

- you have family/friends,

- you *are* safe from natural disasters/bad laws/worse

If I hear one more ignoramus call our wildfires “punishment from God for [insert progressive policy here]” I may just loose it.
(Again, California’s diverse ecosystems are either fire-dependent or fire-adapted. We’ve had fires here for MILLENNIA. But they’re not in January- that’s climate change.)

I've only covered a few examples from around the Mediterranean, but there are countless examples around the world. It's frustrating people will try to change history to fit some personal bias and ignore the spectrum of experiences out there
