“If you want me to have hope, give me a fucking reason.”

@landofsticks.bsky.social holds nothing back in this episode when explaining why fiscal sustainability, road safety, and transit are all failing in post-amalgamation Halifax Regional Municipality.

I find it funny when people ask if I've biked somewhere. Because to me they are asking "You chose to ride your bike through the woods instead of getting in your rage box, accidentally attempting some murders and causing climate change while traversing an aberration of asphalt? Why?"

Depends on whether or not you're reading the handbook or the MVA

If you're ever looking for freelance work I know a guy.

But more seriously, I enjoyed reading ya, fair winds and following seas on whatever comes next.

I am going to invest in this lunch money savings scheme pitched by the guy who is threatening to steal my lunch money.

Pursuing greater defence integration with a country that is actively threatening your sovereignty is absolutely absurd.

Let's also not forget that the driver had to get a license that specifically stipulates that he's not allowed to hit children with his car.

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Firefighters: Don't plug your ebike in overnight. Watch it carefully as it charges.

Public: *gasp* That's so dangerous.

Firefighters: Yes, much like your phone.

Public: I... what?

"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"

We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Highlights
For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement.
Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design.
Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically.
Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street.
There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

When you’re on the bus you really notice that congestion is caused by cars.

I wonder why the municipal code of conduct got changed so that only councillors could make complaints 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The frustrating thing about the premier's visceral reaction here is that he could have reacted with this much zeal anytime on the housing file, by forcing reforms on intransigent municipalities. Standardized upzoning & bans on parking minimums for all the cities are all things the province can do.

I'm proposing a rebrand of the term "as of right development."

I'm workshopping the name "do you call the police just to check that you're allowed to drive the speed limit, no of course not, you don't have to ask permission to follow the law development."

So, so, so many cold open clips this meeting. Front runners are "and before you speak, I have an email" and "Call or click before you dig? We want to look before we dig"

Dutch village road construction found 30 surprise pipes when they started digging. They expected 40, found 70. Those 30 surprise pipes cost time and money.

Hendsbee says maybe should we do this for all construction because of bedrock out in sheet harbour that was actually decomposed trees.

Morse again on ground penetrating radar prior to big construction projects. Forwarned is forarmed and would save us money if we weren't suprised by stuff as soon as we started digging.
landofsticks.bsky.social
St-Amand is asking what work we've done in the past about whether or not do constuction funds can help us today and A/CAO Anguish says what's different is that this is a request for legislation changes to actually do constructioin charges. Passed, we'll write a letter to the province.
