GP numbers have decreased/plateaued in number as other Service providers have increased in number, has service provision and satisfaction levels improved? “We can’t afford GPs” they say…, but economics and the NHS survival says “You can’t afford not to have them”

GP workforce manipulated by NHS England

Cut £2bn from core GP practice funding
‘give’ £1.4bn ARRS & £600m Pharmacy First

Outcome no GP & GPN work & practices closing

Tell me this isn’t on purpose
@rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social
1,391 practices have closed since 2015
Factors causing this can include partner retirements, the inability to recruit staff or GP partners
Whilst the GP workforce has been declining, the number of patients continues to increase, demonstrating the ever-mounting workload

These stats are frankly bonkers. If anybody is complaining about why they are waiting to see a GP. They need to ask why successive governments have not supported the same growth in GP numbers as it has hospital medic numbers.

Agree @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social or just going to sit & watch the end

£3 a week pays for all your GP services

This is 67p less than 8 years ago in real terms

If you can’t see a GP it’s because NHS England have cut the funding for GP practices

So much is said about funding for the NHS £/person is a key metric, it’s also true that despite cash terms rises real terms are the same.

Comparison with other peer countries is also important, if you underinvest for decades the infrastructure is not going to cope when it’s asked to do more

It’s worth pointing out that GPs in England have been working to rule

They still have done a record number of appts

Imagine if they hadn’t done the former and the pressure this would have put on practices

@drkatie.bsky.social @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social
It’s not being done to meet any targets - there aren’t any targets that GPs have to meet

Yet last month another record number of appointments were delivered in GP practices

GPs are trying very hard to make it work as well as they can

GP Crisis is a funding crisis

If @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social wants quick productivity results he should fund community care & GPs

There are potentially 3000 GPs (WTE) available now to work if the funding was made available

Plus Nurses & other community teams ready to employ staff

NHS England has neglected the fact that the increase in cash terms includes payments to PCNs
These payments aren’t available for GP practices to use
Stripping this away, practices have had real terms cuts in income
Fewer GPs employed, practices closing and many more considering closures or cut backs
General practice funding saw 2.5% drop in real terms after Covid
General practice in England saw a real-terms drop of 2.5% in total funding after the Covid pandemic, despite increases to PCN investment.

NHS Dentistry model?
1990s just 6% of Dentists were private providers (mainly London) now it’s 70%

NHS GP contract needs massive funding increase as it’s been cut 20% in 8yrs

UK already seeing increasing adverts for Private GP appts £50-£100

#NHS GPs get £115/yr/patient for everything

ARRS will not be cut with the current NHS England board in place

They think it’s working despite the 31k staff adding just 40m appts for £1.4bn
Compared to 27k GPs doing 160m appts
Cost-benefit not being done at the highest levels & they actually don’t know how it works

The funding cuts to GP Practices by NHSE have been the reason for lack of GP appointments

Until recently ARRS didn’t include GPs (75 GPs in Sept)

Funding 31k staff £1.4bn whilst cutting £2bn in real terms cuts for GP practices

Can’t see a GP blame

Can’t get an appt with a GP?

Yet there are 1000s of GPs out of work or struggling to find work
NHS England have cut the equivalent of 2 full-time GPs in funding from an average practice, whilst funding ‘additional’ roles via ARRS

£2bn cut in real term

Not additional then🤷🏻‍♂️ youtu.be/tI69wqP1_3g?...
