On this day in 1926 a Polish Jewish girl was born. Living in France, on the 3 Aug 1942 she was deported from Pithiviers internment camp to Auschwitz where she was murdered. Her parents and sister were deported on the next transport. Her name was Esther Rudnicka

I am convinced America crossed an event horizon thirteen years ago, when even the deaths of elementary school aged children at the hands of a monster weren't enough for their government to say "enough is enough". Hard not to think that Americans would rather have their guns over their children.

Just finished The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. What an astonishing piece of writing. It skewers the entirety of Western civilisation, takes it to its logical conclusion, destroys it and then offers a tiny atom of hope for the future. Perhaps even more relevant now than when it was written.
