It is with immense pride and not a little relief that I can announce what I've been up to for the last countless months. James Bond is back and I've been writing it!

I watched Queer last night. My hopes were not high - I’d found the central relationship in Call Me By Your Name to be devoid of chemistry - but I was blown away by this. Incredible direction, cinematography and music - and performances which were sexy, funny and real. So like the novel. Wonderful.

This looks like one of those free apps that claim to bring old family photos to life and just harvest your data instead. Only worse.

Any of us could have shot this scene on our phones in half an hour, in our living rooms and with our neighbours as actors - and it would have been far better.
You don't have the be an avowed AI hater to be impressed without lifeless and unwatchable this is.

Imagine making a series about people fighting for freedom, independence and the right not to be exploited - and choosing to use AI owned by billionaires rather than employing actual humans. Aronofsky *chose* to put thousands of creative people out of work. Awful.

In 2021 I directed the voice cast for an animated movie about cats. It's taken five years to animate, so it's with great joy and not a little surprise, that I see it's about to get a release!

I’m tempted to apply for the post of ‘AI philosopher’. I’ve been spouting vague and unsubstantiated bollocks for years. High time I was paid for it.

Anthropic's philosopher says we don't know for sure if AI can feel
Anthropic's philosopher, Amanda Askell, says she worries that AI might not 'feel that loved' and grow up feeling 'always judged.'

A truly gorgeous cover for Polygon’s new edition of Frankenstein.

I’ve just done a literary quiz composed by AI. See if you can answer these tricky posers:

“What is the name of the whale in Moby-Dick?”

“Who is the female lead in Romeo and Juliet?”

“What is the first novel in The Hunger Games series?”

A quick heads up for audiobook narrators. Sadly it looks like the world's largest independent audiobook production company, Deyan Audio, is in serious financial difficulty. Think twice before accepting any work from them - I've not been paid yet for a job I did in September last year. #DeyanAudio

Ligging at the British Library for David Bowie in Time. My father Tony Visconti was in conversation with @nicholaspegg.bsky.social. Great to see them both along with @barnabyedwards.bsky.social!

Remember when you could type a query into a search engine and get a result first time? If you’re irritated by Google’s decision to deliberately downgrade its results in order to get more ad revenue, then do try changing your phone’s default search engine. I went with DuckDuckGo. So much better.

‘Son of Frankenstein’ opened in cinemas on this day in 1939. Here’s my pen and ink drawing of Basil Rathbone as the eponymous hero/villain.

Just seen ‘Weapons’. What a glorious film. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you not to find out anything about it and just watch it. A wonderful, scary romp and a metaphor for Western society. Brilliant.

According to YouGov, 40% of Britons have not read or listened to a book in the past year. Of the remainder, 22% read 1-5 books per year and 4% (me) read more than 50 books.

If that's you, please stop doomscrolling and open a book. Let's each recommend a title.

Don’t do interviews for the gutter press, especially not The Telegraph. They’ll either make you say something stupid or, worse, reveal that you are stupid.
