Modular is one of the more interesting startups I’ve heard about in a long time. Their goal is hyper-specific but super important in the generative AI era: Improve the portability and performance of the software that runs on GPUs, and loosen the Nvidia CUDA chokehold www.wired.com/story/semico...
A Former Apple Luminary Sets Out to Create the Ultimate GPU Software
Demand for AI chips is booming—and so is the need for software to run them. Chris Lattner’s startup Modular just raised $250 million to build the best developer tools for AI hardware.

This @stevenlevy.bsky.social essay is many things. One of them is a love letter to the transformative, oppositional, innovative, optimistic Silicon Valley of the not-too-distant past. When founders talked about changing the world for the better — and meant it.

Serious scholars have examined what happens when we change the number of H1-B visas issued.

Cities that get more H1-B immigrants subsequently see the wages of natives *rise* substantially.

Skilled immigrants bring new ideas, fill labor shortages and make us all more productive.

Btw very important to say that the FCC has not at all said what Kimmel said that was so objectionable! This is classic chilling effect - there are no rules so everyone stops talking

www.theverge.com/news/780471/...
Disney and ABC have pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off air “indefinitely” after FCC chairman Brendan Carr threatened to pull the broadcast licenses of any station that aired his show over comments Kimmel made about the man charged with killing Charlie Kirk.

The decision, according to Variety, was made after television giant Nexstar announced that its local ABC affiliates would pre-empt airings of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, just hours after Carr issued that threat. Nexstar is one of the biggest owners of television stations across the country. We’ve reached out to the FCC for comment on what specifically is objectionable from Kimmel’s show and which FCC regulations he may have violated.
