I know some people are like “no dogs on planes” and I want the opposite. I want me and like 149 dogs and no people.

New PreTeXt feature: Handouts!

If you use guided notes in your teaching, or just want to make accessible versions of the printouts you bring to class, you can now author these in #PreTeXt and print directly from the browser (or save as PDF to annotate on a tablet).

I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?

Did you know MN's own Ben Orlin made 'Math With Bad Drawing' styled images for the 8 Mathematical Practices (thanks to @mctm_mn )? He also added texts to each. You can find MN versions of his work and how to use them to unpack standards HERE: drive.google.com/drive/u/1/fo... #iteachmath #mathstoday

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Capitol Crawl, in which disabled activists discarded their mobility aids at the foot of the Capitol steps to climb them in support of passage of the Americans with Disabilities Ac. Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, 8, told reporters "I'll take all night if I have to!"

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress
🚨 Many NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are being cancelled for Summer 2025.

I love this from Ben Orlin.

“Mathematical truth may be black and white, but mathematical thinking is not.”

Also that maths class can be both welcoming and challenging.

TEACHER VOICE: Instead of worrying about whether math is easy or difficult, let’s make it welcoming - The Hechinger Report
There’s an assumption that teaching math should move students from “easy” to “difficult.” But easy and difficult are only proxies for two higher virtues, the actual qualities of successful instruction...

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that
