Hey All 👋🏻

I’m Laurie, I’m a Software Engineer at Netflix working on a kotlin, graphql, typescript, react stack.

I’ve written and developed a lot of content in the past, but admit to being delinquent these days 😅

I’m convinced, at this point, that about 90% of the things in tech look hard because you aren’t in the details. Once you dig in it’s a permutation of patterns that aren’t too complex.

The other 10%, ya, I’m not smart enough for that shit.

Way to go Virginia!!!

Was busier than usual at the polls when we went this morning. Glad to see that was a good omen.

tired: it's always DNS

My first ever full time developer job was working in the DNS domain.

It’s the backbone of the internet so it is both an unbelievable footgun and incredibly resilient to change. Yes, both can be true at once!

It's always DNS. Except when it's AWS. (In this case, it was both.)
Amazon DNS outage breaks much of the internet | TechCrunch
The outage affected websites like Coinbase and Fortnite, and disrupted services like Signal, Zoom and Amazon's own products, including Ring.

Today is great!

Something working slowly or not at all?

Definitely AWS’s fault! Nothing to see here 🎶

I wonder how many utilities won’t be built because of AI. Quick scripts that format data, or automate other mundane tasks that folks won’t bother to write.

Where in we learn that a us-east-1 outage teaches us a lot about what systems just went with the default 😅

The more systems I explore/learn the less time I have to overthink different permutations of their architecture.

I have yet to determine if this is a pro or a con!

While providing tech support for my FIL:

FIL: What's that screen?

ME: The terminal. You should never use it.

FIL: Never?

ME: So you know how I'm allowed to watch you open the electrical panel and swap out breakers, but I'm not allowed to ever open up it myself?

FIL: Ah! I understand, thank you.

Guess now is as good a time as any!

After 4.5 years in Platform I’ve embarked on a new adventure in Games Platform 🎮

Excited to get closer to Netflix customers and learn a different domain.

I used to sit down to draft blog posts in one sitting.

That doesn’t happen anymore.

I didn’t realize how much practice and repetition had made things easier.

Is that where vibe coding came from?!

After almost a decade, it is time!

New profile pic!

And no…I did not realize I would be wearing the some color shirt until I arrived 😂 And the photographers recommended the pose.

So this is the most recognizable update ever.

Every industry is about to be littered with job postings for AI engineers.

We’re already seeing them. Places that have no other engineering presence or support systems.

I have myriad thoughts, but I also wonder if it’s going to force online communities to surge in response.
