63 years ago this week, King and Ralph Abernathy were convicted for demonstrating without a permit during a December 1961 protest in Albany, Georgia. They chose 45-day jail sentences over paying $178 fines, proclaiming, "Peaceful protest is a part of our American tradition. If we succumb..."
