The Age, Length, and WIP effect on AO3 fic engagement: looking at the median BTS fics by age and length, it looks like longer = more engagement. Age brings hits, and completeness brings Kudos, and comments only for long fresh works.

Grouping recent public BTS fics by their number of workds, this shows the proportion in each bracket that are complete single chaptered works, multichaptered works, and incomplete works (WIPS). WIPs make up around 23% of works over all, and multichapted works take over the plurality from 22K words on. A figure of the median hits on works matched by year and length and completeness, X axis showing number of words. The hits rise sharply with words, and hits accumulate with age, while incomplete works tend to have around 40% of the hits recieved by complete works of the same length.
