After the 1994 Stanley Cup riot The Powers That Be became very spooked about large outdoor gatherings. VPD spokesperson Anne Drennan (remember her?) said that people should stay home on New Years Eve and not come downtown. The “no fun” idea took root soon after.

… more horsemen are shipping to Alberta (compare Century Mile to Hastings’ glorified bull-ring and you’ll see another reason why), and the result is smaller fields and smaller on-track attendance and handle. Today’s announcement was pretty much inevitable. Somebody play “Taps” for BC racing 🎺😔
