BREAKING: PATHA has filed an urgent injunction in the high court seeking to prevent the puberty blocker ban from coming into force, as part of an urgent judicial review we are seeking to overturn the ban entirely.

Honestly, syntax knowing is a necessary but small part of writing useful code.
And the IDE provides excellent syntax support by virtue of a good non learning autocomplete.

The hard and valuable part of programming remains understanding the problem in enough detail to specify a useful solution.
This is the nut of it

I never built my identity around programming ability and so this era has been weirdly pain free

I always resented the code even as I was paid to write it! It’s been impossible to relate to everyone who did a whole sandcastle around Syntax Knowing

there’s so much more to do

200+ People showed up on a sunny Sunday afternoon to talk about the puberty blockers ban. We had everyone from youth just off blockers to retired adults making noise and speaking about trans rights.
It was huge and awesome. There's a public meeting coming. www.instagram.com/stories/quee...

So. As a treat this trans awareness week, we get from the central government a ban on puberty blockers *only* in case of gender shit.

Could the cis please just stop perceiving me for a year or two.

Read this quote. Digest it. Then read the thread that it's responding to.

Never Again Is NOW!
“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”

Reasons to never trust a verbal offer number NaN

Am on fixed term, got a verbal offer for permanent with a nice chunky pay bump.
Now I find out that they didn’t have approval for a bump that large and it has to go to the head of HR for approval.

Fuck sakes assholes.

Tired, grumpy, the weather is shit, and I have to be at work dealing with people and systems that don’t want to let me do what I’m paid to.

Why the fuck do we allow work to be like this?

Absolutely this. The code is the *easiest* part of writing software, and the AI tools can’t handle that worth shit.
The code was never what took anywhere near the majority of time anyhow.

Funny how it’s only ever the far right voices they amplify. Almost like they’re not about free speech at all…
ACT will host James Lindsay as the keynote at their annual rally. Lindsay is described by ACT as “a globally recognised advocate for free speech, open inquiry, and classical liberal values“.

What ACT fails to mention is that Lindsay is a globally recognised racist, homophobe, and transphobe.

The defeat of the Treaty Principles Bill was a resounding win for anti-fascism and anti-racism. But the fight is not over. The Regulatory Standards Bill is even more harmful to Te Tiriti. Make sure to get your submissions in by the 23rd of June.

Feels like they're institutionally transphobic enough to just not care. There's more important things than our lives and health.
Nicola willis got called a cunt by a reporter, that's much more interesting than our lives.
The NZ govt is refusing to allow updated clinical guidelines for trans healthcare to be released.

Their reasoning is clearly bad-faith and ideologically in line with the ‘culture war’ restrictions of people’s rights in the US.

Medical bodies are speaking out. Where is the media coverage of this?

On a more personal level, I've seen the amount of work so many people have put into this update, at great personal cost for many of them. The final document is beautiful, compassionate, considered, and sorely needed. It's devastating to get this close only to be stonewalled by the Minister.

It's our view that this is a clear case of political interference in a clinical guidance issue, as Cabinet consider restricting trans childrens' right to access healthcare. Puberty blockers make up a small portion of this guideline's content, which is in line with MoH's position statement.

They were due for publication at the end of March 2025. Two weeks prior, Associate Minister of Health Doocey got an FYI. That week, an additional FYI was sent to the Minister of Health. With less than 24h notice, we were informed publication would not go ahead. We have not been given a date.
