💥The West urged resistance to Moscow, then stood aside and did nothing when Russian tanks rolled in. This narrative of Western betrayal dates back to Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution. Back then the USSR was powerful — not a failing state like today’s Russia.

Will history still repeat itself?

Moscow is celebrating because they finally got a multi-polar world order, but I don't think they envisioned this including a European continent armed to the teeth.
The war, the geopolitical uncertainty and the new arms race started by Putin have left Europe with no choice. Europe must be ready for this race, and Russia will lose it like the Soviet Union 40 years ago. From today, Europe will arm itself more wisely and faster than Russia.

I have spent a lot of time explaining what a “European Army” might be. See 👇.
The proposal of the article linkes to in the first post goes more in the direction of a 28th army. That option has become *much more* likely now because of the changed situation.

The never-ending debate of the European Army and why it is unhelpful | Heinrich Böll Stiftung
Ever since its first proposal in the 1950s, the European army has been a ghost in the system of European Defence debates. But it is an unhelpful and distracting concept for the challenges that the EU ...

This is an excellent chart, most notably because it shows that the collapse of mainstream parties in Europe & the rise of the far right started with the GFC/Lost Decade/needless austerity from 2008-18. Yes, the refugee crisis, Covid, & inflation mattered, but it was all well under way by then.
After the AfD's surge on Sunday, far right parties are the most voted-for of any grouping in Europe, for the first time in history: www.economist.com/graphic-deta...

What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

“You [Ukraine] should have never started it” were his precise words. Started the illegal invasion of their own lands?

Once again I am leaving the Munich Security Conference in a low mood. Amongst all the noise, the US signalled their plans for Europe, so things are becoming clearer. But things are clearly not good.
This is what we now know, and what we have to do about it:🧵1/17

Selbstversuch: So radikalisiert TikTok österreichische Teenager
Wir haben den Selbstversuch gewagt, uns auf TikTok als österreichische Teenager ausgegeben und uns radikalisieren lassen.

Carl Schmitt has returned. This is an outright rejection of the very basics of the separation of powers we know since the days of Montesqieu and thus the legal and constitutional system of every democracy that deserves this categorization. By the vice president of the United States.
