It is. Apex get between 1000 and 1200 every month. So even closing every other month, the slush team is working through 6000+ stories a year. And we typically publish 4-6 per issue, so 16 to 24 stories all year. It's a lot!

After a lot of discussion with @retreasure.bsky.social, I feel like this is the best way to avoid a long closure period like we had in 2025 AND to not fall too far behind on the slush pile. I really want Apex to be able have a reasonable turn around time. That's not possible if we don't ever close.

One of her Tommy and Tuppence books is a series of related short stories where each story is told in the style of a popular mystery writer at the time. Absolutely brilliant!

I'm not saying Uncle Baby Billy was a good person, but sometimes I think we could all use a little of his energy to deal with reality.

I know! As someone who's been doing a yearly reading recap in December on Facebook for years, I feel like I need to step up my game! One post with my yearly stats is clearly not enough!

But I kinda like the chaos of my star system. It's all vibes. And most books are good. If they aren't my jam, I typically DNF and don't rate them.

This is so accurate. 3 stars to me is a good book. It could also be bad, but the writing was okay. 4 stars is also a good book, but it also could be great. 5 stars means I loved it. Or it's just good but I'm feeling optimistic that day. (2 stars could also be pretty good, if I'm being honest.)
