Excellent #askaneditor question! I’ll answer in a few replies, focusing on what I (try to) do and knowing that you’ll get slightly different answers from different editors, editrixes, and word-nerds of all sorts.

For folks who don’t know all the things an editor does, when do you typically get involved in the process?

Strawberry rhubarb milkshake. That’s really it. Just wanted to make sure you knew about this possibility. It’s bringing me joy, filling my cup, and all the other word-art gerunds, even in the midst of *waves hands* everything.

🚨Academic friends: My editing schedule in October has opened up--and I have room for 3 journal article edits this month! Let me know if you or a colleague is in need of my services 📝

Grateful in this moment for Maria Bamford and Josh Gondelman, dogs (in general and specific), La Croix Pamplemousse sparkling water, good in-laws, zazen in 20 min., and the color yellow!

For those of you that like free samples, we put a track from our recent Dick Davy release up on our #soundcloud page (produced by @jasonklamm.com). We're particularly proud of this record, and hope that you pick up a digital, or even better, a #vinyl copy.

Look to comments for guidance.

Current projects: @contexts.org’s last 2 print issues, injection assistance providers, Catholic rebels, sovereignty in the Marshall Islands, social media polarization, Chicago and gangs, talking about guns, skulls and statistics. My job keeps it interesting! What are you working on?

Excellent earlybird vibes at Berlin for the Children of Incarcerated Caregivers fall fundraiser! Learn more and, if you’re inspired and able, join us in donating at cicmn.org

It's also beautifully written!

Tiny writing tip: Avoid starting paragraphs with discounting words like while, although, and despite. They subtly signal that the reader doesn't need to care about the first part of the sentence/entirety of the paragraph, and avoiding them makes your writing more confident. #writeon

Human Rights Watch is hiring a senior researcher for its U.S. immigrant rights program.

Not many non-newsroom jobs are this similar to the day to day work of journalism. If you’re a journalist and considering getting out, seriously take a look. job-boards.greenhouse.io/humanrightsw...

Grateful for smart people writing actionable books, brave people running for office, and organized people showing us ways forward. Smaller gratitudes include my supercharged zinnia bed, reconnecting with my therapist, jumpsuits, and the sounds of my neighborhood drifting through open windows.

I met my dearest friend Shanna on the first day of the 7th grade. I was wearing a shirt that said, on one side, "Youth Against Fascism," and, on the other, "I Believe Anita Hill." Who ever would have thought the shirt would remain as relevant as the friendship in 2025?

BTW, commercial cash bail systems? Only the U.S. and the Philippines have those.
lettapage.bsky.social
What? This is super cool and super timely: on Monday, Trump signed EOs targeting jurisdictions curbing cash bail, a predatory CJ practice that makes billions for private industry but does nothing to increase safety or ensure court appearance. tinyurl.com/BailEO Glad you're running for office, Chris!

Just finished the intro to this book (Legal Plunder) and I can already tell it’s gonna be a good one. @joshpage.bsky.social & @joesoss.bsky.social are diving deep into how the government and businesses use policing, punishment, and immigrant detention to extract revenues from communities.

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that

The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

Since this was written, the "B" representing bisexual Americans in the remaining "LGB" acronym has also been removed from the national memorial literature. It is difficult to keep up with the damage being done. @dcunningham-stl.bsky.social @contexts.org @lettapage.bsky.social @asanews.bsky.social
