I this letter to the FT I argue with @neilmcculloch.bsky.social and @garethwilliams.bsky.social that in response to unprecedented cuts, development aid ought to focus on locally-led change, not more $ for multilaterals

There has been lots of discussion on LinkedIn and everywhere about the future of aid. Some say it needs to "do more with less", others say we need to prioritise only global public goods. I have a different take on the issue, just published on the LSE blog and The Policy Practice.

Our letter to the Prime Minister expressing deep concern regarding his decision to cut ODA.

This will have a direct and devastating impact on the lives of millions. The aid budget is an important instrument for long-term stability and economic partnership. We hope the government will reconsider.

'Innovative Pathways: When and How to Use Alternative Approaches to Human Rights Impact Assessments.' The background is textured blue with white text. The briefing paper highlights the importance of Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs) in corporate human rights and environmental due diligence while also discussing alternative approaches such as rapid assessments, joint HRIAs, and sector-wide assessments. On the right side, there is an image of farmworkers harvesting pineapples, with a cover of the briefing paper featuring the same image. REACTION: Oxfam response to the UK Government’s decision to cut the aid budget

Full reaction here: oxfam.org.uk/mc/manvna/
Quote from Halima Begum, CEO, Oxfam GB: "We understand that defence spending has become a major concern in our fast-changing world. However, cutting the already lean aid budget is a false economy and will only increase division, and amounts to a betrayal of the world’s most vulnerable people."
