Yes it cost £1.5bn last year to switch off windmills when we had more wind than the grid could take, but wind energy made £50bn worth of power that year - so this £1.5bn cost was just 3% of the benefit we gained.

As we begin to crawl out of the long nights I remember the consternation from people in the USA when I tried to explain that the UK is so far north that in winter the sun sets at 4pm and we get only seven and a half to eight hours of day, but in the summer our days are so long we dont get full night
