This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

Women, trans folks, and POC in our armed forces have fought hard to have even a small amount of protection from bigotry, sexism, and sexual assault at their workplace. Hegseth just told them he won't protect them, while sounding the dog whistle to tell predators they can have at it. Shameful.
atrupar.com
Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."
lindseyportmn.bsky.social
If anything, these threats make us more sure change is needed. Particularly aiming threats at queer or POC legislators does not make you brave. It does show that you know who gets work done.
lindseyportmn.bsky.social
Pushing right wing trolls to female democrat lawmakers social media pages to threaten them is despicable. We will continue our work to pass gun violence prevention legislation, but we shouldn't have to do it in terror for ourselves and our friends. You won't take our political will to do this work.

In the words of Speaker Melissa Hortman, "We are the leaders we've been waiting for."

Call a special session, Governor. I invite my colleagues across the aisle to stand with us for the kids of MN. And if they won't, they should have to look us all in the eye while they vote no.
lindseyportmn.bsky.social
I've waited my whole life for the adults to do something to stop this terror from ripping apart our children's lives. I've watched my own kids have to adjust to a normal that includes active shooter drills. I've watched tragedy after tragedy unfold on the evening news. No more.

"We are the leaders we've been waiting for."

I strongly believe we should have a special session to ban assault weapons, binary triggers, and high capacity magazines. And we should institute a buy back program for people who have those weapons.
lindseyportmn.bsky.social
Exactly right. Equity, accountability, agency... these do not equal "hating" or "roadblocks" unless all you want is entitlement.
pbump.com
I have never seen any example of the left "hating" young men that doesn't distill to "refusal to coddle them/insistence on treating them like adults with agency."

The cost of housing is rising, and too many Minnesotans are being priced out of homeownership.

As federal housing aid is cut and costs increase, the Housing budget we passed today takes critical steps to ensure every Minnesotan can find or keep a safe, stable place to call home. #mnleg
“This legislation will help us build more homes by investing in Greater Minnesota's
infrastructure needs; it will support diverse first-generation homebuyers with down payment assistance programs; and it will provide stability for renters through the Family Homelessness Prevention and Assistance Program”

We passed the Housing Finance and Policy bill off the Senate floor today with bipartisan support. Now it just needs to pass the House and be signed by the Governor.

I'm proud to be a co-signer of this letter, and horrified we even had to write it. Every Senator who voted to confirm RFK is complicit in this bigoted, anti-science, ableist agenda.

Folks with autism, you are loved. You are worthy. You belong here.
senatedfl.bsky.social
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s comments about autism are profoundly hateful and ignorant.

DFL Senate Members of Human Services and Health and Human Services committees released a statement, you can read in full here: senatedfl.mn/senate-dfler...
Blue background, white text.

“People with autism are human beings with inherent worth and dignity. They are beloved members of their families, our communities and our state.
Secretary Kennedy's comments about people with autism are ignorant and dangerous. Every United States Senator who voted to confirm
Secretary Kennedy must answer for the hateful rhetoric he spews. His anti-science, ableist agenda is part of the broader push to dismantle public health and scientific advancement.”

We're told the FDA is now making plans to end most of its routine food safety inspections

That oversight work would be effectively outsourced to state and local authorities, under this plan

In a world full of crap news, find a moment of joy. I choose to find joy in an article about potentially cool space shit. I find even more joy in the fact that the article was shared by one of my absolute favorite sci-fi authors, @scalzi.com.

He's a great follow, too. Read Old Man's War.

Don't get excited. But maybe you can get a little excited about the possibility of getting excited.

(Also, this is exactly the sort of stuff the current administration is planning to defund. Fuck those dudes.)

THIS. We are in a different world, and if we can't get our shit together, our party will be complicit in the downfall of American democracy.

This is a moment to do what is morally right. I believe people will support that with their votes, but if I'm wrong, so be it. I'd rather lose than comply.

Trying to keep up with all the awful shit Trump and his lackeys do is exhausting. This week has felt like 3 years, and we still have their favorite day of the week to do horrible things left. Get some rest, friends. We've got work to do. Also, wtf, dems who voted for the SAVE Act. WTAF.

The Trump administration is now canceling people's Social Security Numbers, treating them as if they are legally dead. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/u...
Now, the administration is taking drastic steps to pressure some of those immigrants and others who had legal status to “self-deport” by effectively canceling the Social Security numbers they had lawfully obtained, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times and interviews with six people familiar with the plans.

The goal is to cut those people off from using crucial financial services like bank accounts and credit cards, along with their access to government benefits.

The effort hinges on a surprising new tactic: repurposing Social Security’s “death master file,” which for years has been used to track dead people who should no longer receive benefits, to include the names of living people who the government believes should be treated as if they are dead. As a result, they would be blacklisted from a coveted form of identity that allows them to make and spend money.

We are legally obligated to balance the budget. The committee I chair (housing) has a 2 year budget of $165M. We cannot absorb the cost if Trump cuts rental assistance that over 20,000 MN families rely on. We will have an overnight homelessness crisis.
esqueer.net
The economic collapse will destroy the social safety net. States cannot deficit spend by law. As revenues nosedive, they'll be forced to cut back on education, healthcare, and vital programs. They'll also be more dependent on federal funding giving Trump more leverage.
lindseyportmn.bsky.social
Yay. Another way people will die from these shitty policies. The hits just keep on coming.

The courts will not save us.
radleybalko.bsky.social
The government is snatching people off the streets and shipping them to foreign prisons from which, the government claims, they can never be extracted. All with no due process. It’s as bad as it gets. And this court is again avoiding the reality of what’s happening at all costs.
leahlitman.bsky.social
The majority writing that individuals need due process and notice and an opportunity to file a habeas petition is nice. But it reads to me as partially designed to take the sting off the majority’s brutal order - while not altering its horrifying substance all that much.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines.

When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

We had lots of good reasons to legalize in 2023. Self- care through the shitstorm that is the last 75 days is another unexpected one.
