I post about language geekery and translation. I've been a full-time translator since 2003, providing human translations from Spanish, French, Catalan, Portuguese, and Ladino into English. Web: linguacaps.com. YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@linguacap.

Most Spanish words come from Latin, but did you know there are 2 different types?

Words inherited from spoken Latin vs. words borrowed from written Latin during the Middle Ages and after.

Some words took both routes, creating doublets.

Here’s episode 3 of my 10-part doublet series.
Next: Italian.

Authors, remember that you CAN insist on human translation for your foreign-language editions and have it written into your contracts. You can no longer just assume you're going to get a human to work on the book whose every word you wrote with intent.

Honestly, folks... You don't need to platform every horrific, vicious, infantile thing the president of the United States says.

Instead, boost the voices of the people he's saying them about. Ignore the angry-toddler tantrums unless they have policy implications.

I demonstrate this using official pharmaceutical documentation, but you can use this approach in other fields, too.

I had a wonderful time this past week at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, meeting with publishers and agents and attending great workshops run by the Institut Ramon Llull.

As part of the fair, I also gave the closing keynote address at the Mexican Translators Organization (OMT) conference.

My new video: How to translate film scripts in a CAT tool.

Is it possible to translate Final Draft® files in the CAT tools that professional translators use? Yes, but it’s complicated...

Hello from the American Literary Translators Association conference in Arizona!

Tonight was the annual theater-translation event: "Cold Beers and Cold Readings," including part of my translation of "Women on Radio" by Cristina Clemente. Some people are so good at unrehearsed performances! #ALTA48

What better place to work on translating a stage play into English than in the Drama Book Shop in New York? Soaking up the creative energy...

My ego as a #translator is having an unusually good day. A publisher just referred to me as "the great Steven Capsuto" in a LinkedIn post, and I just read an interview with an author who thanked me for helping him make his book better. 😊 For a profession that usually gets ignored, that's all lovely.

In the past, when I gave lectures based on a book, it was always one I had written and I knew the content inside out. But now, in the US, I'm the public face of a 600-page book written by someone else, which I translated into English.

In the days after Charlie Kirk's death, half the internet sounds like that awful guy at the office who keeps going up to women coworkers and saying, "What are you talking about? Bob's a great guy! *I've* never heard him harass anyone!" #CreepyAssholes

I'm now translating a wonderful new realist-drama play from Catalonia for a client: "Hands" by Llàtzer Garcia is a two-hander about a husband and wife, about recovery from mental illness, and about being caught between personal and professional needs. #theater #theatre #teatre #translation #català

Just got advance copies of a book I translated into English: "When Einstein Met Kafka: Jewish Contributions to the Modern World" by the Spanish cultural historian @diegomoldes.bsky.social.

The English edition comes out next week from Mandel Vilar Press. 😀 #translation #JewishBooks #JewishHistory

I wake up troubled by deep political concerns, like...

The week Margaret Thatcher died, the song "Ding, Dong! The Witch is Dead!" charted in the UK. What song will chart in the US if the rumors about Trump are true?

I'm excited about next week's Evolving Linguist Conference (Sept. 6, New Brunswick, NJ) organized by the Delaware Valley Translators Association and Rutgers (my alma mater), among others. I'll arrive on 9/5, probably humming On the Banks of the Old Raritan." 😃

As Lily Tomlin said decades ago: "Ninety-eight percent of the adults in this country are decent, hard-working, honest Americans. It's the other lousy two percent that get all the publicity. But then, we elected them."

This week's fun mix of translation-into-English projects: two TV scripts, a private client's academic record, and then back to the stage play I've been translating. 😎 #translation #TranslatorsLife

“I've done almost every other kind of translation possible, but literature was out for me because of how much I love books,” Tejima says. “It was an untouchable thing. I was too scared to do it.”

Yuki Tejima's metamorphosis from bookworm to literary translator
An Instagram “bookfluencer” and professional translator for over 10 years, Tejima’s love of books was, strangely enough, a hurdle to working in literary translation.

Same here. In the language pairs I translate most often (Spanish-English and Catalan-English), I can work from scratch much faster than I can edit a machine translation. If I had a special " #MTPE rate," it would be higher than my base rate. But instead, I only take #translation gigs.
