We all need to be so vigilant about this sort of misuse of language, and calling it out & correcting it - especially when the media uncritically adopts the spin. This sort of bullshit is rife in Australia too, but we can all stop buying into it.
In the 20th century, they were known as "concentration camps." Now, they are simply called "housing."

Doesn't that sound so much more humane? Voila, problem solved!

Hard to believe but 18 years ago, I sent the great Alfonso Cuaron an advance copy of The Shock Doctrine and asked if he might be willing to write a blurb.

He made a short film instead. This is it. Still chills me.

Share with whoever you think it might help.

It began in the 1980s when the generation who did not fight in WWII assumed power (or at least the plurality of voters). It saw the end of the post-WWII social contract, the start of neo-liberalism and disdain for learning. Coupled with the rise of Murdoch power pushing all 3.

Straight line to now
The 80th year anniversary of the end of WWII will mostly be noting how long it took for Nazi views to become acceptable in the mainstream again.

A big misconception about Greenland is that since it’s labeled a Danish colony, its residents are just a bunch of white dudes named Kristian—which is extremely harmful and inaccurate.

The population is 85% Indigenous! It belongs to the Kalaallit people, not to Denmark and CERTAINLY not to the U.S.

I’ll never get over that all of this was avoidable and our kids could’ve had a better future had voters just made the obviously rational choice in November. It’s water under the bridge now. But what the fuck, people.

Is someone keeping a list of all the companies junking their DEI policies so we know who not to buy from? Or companies doing the right thing so we can support them? We need to be naming & shaming in a way that's easy to find and share.

Australia is increasingly criminalising peaceful protests while allowing corporate lobbying to thrive.

As @jack-thrower.bsky.social writes - Protesting fines are expensive; lobbying is cheap. #OffTheCharts

The cruelty of this is gobsmacking. I'd rather spend my time with a homeless person and their dog than a Moreton Bay councilor any day. People and their pets doing it tough need help and compassion, not punishment. www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12...

Australia’s housing affordability crisis is not that difficult to solve: increase supply and lower demand by ending the incentives that treat housing as an investment vehicle rather than someone’s home. Now if only we had a government brave enough to do it.
