Felt compelled to write this. On the state of things, this Reconciliation Week. First Nations people in this country are under constant attack. Subject to systems and attitudes designed to control and silence us. We resist by speaking out.
Control is the Oldest Reflex
From custody to culture to the page, the state still decides who gets to speak, survive, and be seen - even during reconciliation week.

Saltbush is in full flower and the berries are appearing and ripening. Tastie little morsels if I can beat the birds, goanna and chickens to them. My lucky day today obviously. 🌱

I tried to resist writing about this particular white gazed book, but couldn't. Here's my essay on Evie Wyld's dehumanisation of Blak people, and co-option of Blak trauma for her latest sad white girl novel. Harmful white gazed novels need to be left in colonial eras. overland.org.au/2025/02/echo...
Echoing of the white gaze in Evie Wyld’s The Echoes - Overland literary journal
Wyld’s creation of voiceless-nameless-lifeless Blak people in The Echoes serves no narrative purpose. This novel is not truth-telling of invasion and occupation, and it does not envision justice for A...

The relief the MHT I use will be on the PBS come March is real. I don't use the full dose because that's not always in the budget. This means I will have full benefit from the medication. Hopefully it will make it accessible to more people experiencing perimenopause & postmenpausal symptoms.

Banksia watch is in full swing. My most mature shrub is flowering earlier than past years. Not complaining and neither are the birds 🌱🐦

A baby pink and grey galah turned up in my backyard and it was the smallest I'd seen without parents. It seemed healthy and could fly but not strong enough to keep up with the others. It's had refuge here and each day it gets stronger. Happy my garden is a safe haven.

When you go to the regular monthly farmers market on Invasion/Survival Day wearing your Ancestress Teila Watson artwork T-shirt and people either side eye you or still wish you a Happy celebrate the day and you have to explain why you don't celebrate.

Every Invasion/Survival Day the absolute worst of people comes out. So far tonight we've had burn outs and someone running around with an air rifle. Tomorrow, just add drinking alcohol in the sun all day at the beach and it will be a complete shit show.

Volunteered to prick out and pot up native plants for future revegetation projects & stock the local community nursery. Honoured to be trusted with 103 Eucalyptus Rudis babies 🌱. One day they will be up to 20 metres tall & provide critters with food and shelter. How cool is that!

After 10pm and still 30°C for a second night in a row. Ceiling fan has packed it in. Not a breath of wind. Reminds me of summers of my childhood.

Today was a better day. First in four days I didn't get notified someone I know had died. A real reflection time and time for some self care and empathy and compassion. It's been rough over the last few weeks for many.
