Love this Tara. Great to champion alternative forms of travel to aviation. Great reading everyone else's experience additionally.

I love that monologue so much. Wonderfully recited by Rutger Hauer....who apparently updated the original script to make it more cinematic. A truly great film!

Unfortunately it's fake Joe as confirmed by others. I shared it uncritically a while ago as it spoke to me of a life well lived on your own terms. Clearly projecting here. She came across as a warm & thoughtful lady behind the acting caricature we all knew & loved. May she rest in peace.

Such a sad loss. A wonderful man full of vitality and purpose in his love for the Irish language and the natural world it described. He wrote a beautifully written article on why he stopped flying in spite of his deep & enduring love of travel with moral clarity & sincerity. One of the best of us.

I'm so sad to read this. Manchán was one of a kind. An incredible writer and storyteller.

A warm and fascinating person with a great sense of adventure, brilliant mind, and a deep ghrá for our landscape, folklore, and language.

He had so much more to give. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Ah ok. I'm already frustrated with vendor lock in that prevails with major US Tech platforms. Even worse when govt agencies are not standing up for citizen privacy rights given this huge power imbalance. Thank you for engaging Robin. I've been very much enlightened by these posts.
lolaclare.bsky.social
Thank you Robin. I was vaguely aware of the importance of Irish DPC for European citizen's data privacy. Not trying to let us off the hook but it is an awesome responsibility for a small nation irrespective of prevailing corporate state capture. I think E.U. additionally need to step in here.....
lolaclare.bsky.social
Could you expand on this Robin. Curious Irish person here not naive to our Irish govt. sell out to corporate interests. I presume its the slow response of Irish Data Protection Commissioner to US tech regulatory breaches who headquarter here...
lolaclare.bsky.social
It clearly will need principled risk aware smaller state institutions such as your example to create momentum....yet at scale still requires E.U. policy support. I presume it's fear of retaliatory trade terms etc if E.U. pushes too strongly too soon...

Thanks for sharing Maria. Great news & hopefully sets a chain for more deplatforming. I feel major US tech execs committed an own goal in their slavish deference to an authoritarian regime when their technologies run on a principle of benevolent societal progress ..nominally at any rate
lolaclare.bsky.social
Welcome development! Yet here in Ireland, every college I attended requires students to download MS Auth. app on mobile device to access student portals. This is a worrying level of vendor lock-in to US tech now aided by US govt intent on global subservience to their technology. #digitalsoverignty.

Austrian military: "It was very important for us to show we are doing this primarily to strengthen digital sovereignty, maintain independence in terms of ICT infrastructure, and ensure data is only processed in-house."

And they didn't just switch to Libre Office, they invest in its development, too

This is a really important article outlining a further injustice toward the Palestinian people in the systemic destruction of all ability to sustain life by an abjectly cruel & nihilistic regime.

This is a really important post & article particularly relevant to government proposals to remove Dublin airport passenger cap. Skewers the empty promise of sustainable aviation fuel while highlighting the deep inequity underlying aviation GHG emissions.

As a working-class person, I can't take this at face value. The system is rigged, and politicians won't listen to people like me. I also know that it's not the fault of migrants, trans people, etc.

You can voice your frustration and abandonment without fascism, as it happens.

This is amazing......something that could help with our unfortunate proclivity here in Ireland to pave garden spaces that suffer poor drainage.
dagmarfischer.bsky.social
What a great idea!

"During the months of the annual competition, Dutch residents are encouraged to replace paving slabs in their gardens with greenery and plants, and then report their activity with photo proof."

This is something I have been thinking of quite recently when considering information overload of our modern digital age and societal inertia on the issues of climate change & environmental degradation....great thread from Eliot.

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

Firstly, is sustainable tourism not an oxymoron? In spite of its many advantages, greenways entail "right of way" development that doesn't always allow due consideration to intact plant & wildlife species. It is happening similarly where I live in an area that feels like nature's last refuge locally

Thank you for sharing. This is such a joyous testimony to a life well lived. What a lovely and wonderful woman. I read before she didn't marry or have children as she was devoted to her craft. I love the way life kept getting better for her as she grew older.
