Potato History Reclaimed.

So there's an EU-funded campaign to get millenials to eat potatoes and - I swear to Jesus I'm not making this up - it's slogan is: "Europe's favourite since 1536."
A screenshot of a website that says "DISCOVER THE TASTY VERSATILITY OF POTATOES! Europe's favourite since 1536." banner ads say "funded by the european union" and "enjoy - it's from europe."

Very happy to see colleague Ray Blake has won the big book prize for political writing this year, the Shaughnessy Cohen.

Congrats to the whole shortlist!

Ray Blake's book on how prime ministerial speechifying has shaped 🇨🇦 national identity since 1945.

He's right that PMs have a job of nation-building to do and their nationalist talking points matter in that job

Not just a repetitive list of platitudes. Continuity and change. Tracks Overton window

What's the rationale for this? Cost savings via amalgamation of departments and reduction of staff comes to mind.... And how will it change the individual work lives/work loads of faculty?

Saddened to learn that J.R (Jim) Miller passed away a little over a week ago. His scholarship on Indigenous history, I think it is fair to say, was extremely influential for many of us - and his survey textbooks provided an accessible entry point. www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com/obituaries/j...

Oh no! So sorry to hear this Jim was editor of the CHR when I submitted my first article there. He was a generous scholar and I learned a lot from him.

Not sure what you mean. You should have access to the article, no?

With contributions from Chic Scott to Liza Piper to Bruce Cockburn (!) to …dozens & dozens more, this is a fantastic, monumental (mountainous?) work. Cheers to Eric & all.

And great to have it in @nichecanada.bsky.social / @ucalgarypress.bsky.social Canadian History & Environment series.

Really thrilled to announce that our new book on the history of the #MohawkInstitute is now available in #OpenAccess format. You can pay for the physical book, but you can also read a digital copy for free. This was a very important choice for us: press.ucalgary.ca/books/978177... #cdnhist #cdnpoli

Denmark has cut taxes on books as part of a plan to improve reading levels.

Australia could look at cutting GST on books - something industry proposed to the Howard government all those years ago.

Environmental Historians!

What are your favorite digitized archival collections or resources for undergraduates to use?

I'm directing a senior capstone seminar on (North American Environmental History theme). I know that new primary sources are digitally released daily. What are your favorites?
