It's fitting that the cover on AI mindlessly apes an earlier creation and also displaces workers while elevating Silicon Valley plutocrats.

Warming seas threaten key phytoplankton species that fuels the food web, study finds
New research suggests that a tiny phytoplankton that is an essential part of the marine food web may decline sharply as oceans warm.

We’re quite deep within the Singularity right now, though it’s turned out be the Singularity of Stupid (SoS), which effectively prevents the original concept of the Singularity from happening.

Excellent albeit alarming view of a seismically reshuffled world order by @nilsgilman.bsky.social where power and alliances revolve around diverging energy futures and the willingness to accept or deny unfolding climate realities.

“Grit” ffs. The kids are not all right because they’re not stupid. They see environmental collapse, mad kings, two (2) nuclear standoffs and an economic system that creates billionaires rather than solving problems and they get unhappy. They’re rational.
Kids are locked out of home ownership, burdened with tuition fees, suffer massive poverty, are threatened by the climate crisis and AI, had their live chances whacked by Brexit, have no healthcare support, and are constantly monstered by the press.

They don't need "grit"; they need fairness.

Really incredible story unraveling in this thread, where Amazon and other sites have seemingly been able to sell an academic textbook that was withdrawn in 2021 and never actually printed or published, without the knowledge of the press, editors or contributors. Something has gone deeply wrong!
Hi Chloe,
This is news to me (and to my editor at Routledge.) I'm shocked to find this out. I assume that this is somehow a pirated edition. Does it include the section on Neurodiversity? Part VIII?

Grid operators in Portugal say hot weather triggered "induced atmospheric vibration" in high voltage lines, causing the massive power cuts on the Iberian Peninsula today.

This is yet to be confirmed by Spain etc. But if I am interpreting this right, it's jaw-dropping.

Trains, traffic lights, card payments, and phone networks have been hit, as an EU official also rules out a cyber attack as the cause.

I was initially reluctant to post this as it's so very sad, so very frightening, if you think about what it foreshadows--and the news is so dark. But we need to know. This is, also, a kind of metaphor--a symbol of what we're doing to the world as a whole.

It's utter madness.
In today's column I discuss how Labour in the UK, just like Trump in the US, is dismantling the administrative state. And how this makes its other plans, including the good things it's trying to do, impossible to implement.

“Solidarity” is not an idea that often pops up in British newspapers, even to deride it. It’s no exaggeration to say that I have heard the word used more often in reference to a 1980s Polish trade union than as a value we might or should hold.
Labour has lost the language of solidarity
Political rhetoric is transactional and utilitarian – this needs to change.
