I know this might not feel important right now, but words make the world. Using disabled experience as a metaphor for abled experience deprives that language of its specific & necessary meaning and underscores our erasure in public life. It ensures we don't get to be protagonists, just costumes.

Ablist phrases to get out of your vocabulary because you're a kind person who doesn't want to casually or accidentally hurt others with your words:

"Blind spot" as a metaphor

"Paralyzed" as a metaphor

"Crippled" in reference to anything, not just people - this word is a slur

"Wheelchair bound"

🎯 The currently non-disabled also don't want to face the fact that at any moment they could become one of us, and like any normative group that oppresses Others, they fear being on the receiving end of the same discriminatory behaviors they currently engage in.

The philosopher Eva Feder Kittay has an interesting take on this: Starting from interdependency doesn't go far enough.

Every human starts life completely dependent, many end life dependent, and everyone spends some of the time in between dependent. Some only a little time, some a lot.

Also the environments where disabled people are physically or mentally (think autism) unable to enter the room.
So, less visible to society at large, less opportunity for non disabled people to benefit from getting to know people with a disability.
Disabled are still fighting the visibility factor

This is it. Abled people are so afraid of being reliant on community that you don't even realize how interdependent on each other you are. The only reason ANY of us live is because we rely on each other. The disabled are just more visible about it.

What's so wild is that if you leaned our way a bit, you'd see acknowledging we need each other - offering care according to need and capacity - is a much richer and more satisfying way to live. It's only the change that's painful
