bits of gilded plaster, pasteboard bricks, posters; an arid gloom fleeted; and amidst the dust, and the falling things, and the flapping scenery, Cin-cinnatus made his way in that direction where, to judge by the voices, stood beings akin to him. One reason I love this passage is that it is beautiful. Another is that it saved my life. "Inspiration" is too meager a description for what these words did, but there in the psychiatric ward I remembered them and lived by their prin-ciples. The bungling hero of a novel I loved manages to think his way out of something from which there appears to be no escape; I, too, was a bungler-I literally could not stop falling down— but to some extent, I knew I was also in a prison of my own making, and I was not interested in being imprisoned any longer. I began, there in my hopeless and helpless state, to give different answers to the questions being put to me. Having deduced lines to say out loud that would let me out, I let myself out of where I was. I told the doc- 1 minute left in chapter 23% walks, blinking in the sunshine in a one or two block radius. There someone called my name, a middle-aged woman with a stack of papers stacked on the hood of her beat-up car. I recognized her at once. It was my Nabokov professor. It's a little tricky to describe how much the work of Vladimir Nabokov meant to me at the time, but if there was anything else that gave me the feeling that something was to have an enormous and permanent effect on my psyche, besides pale figures from violent night-mares, it would be the prose of this glorious American author. I'd read Lolita before college, and found it far more difficult and depressing than the sexual romp its cultural notoriety had promised me, so I'm not sure what prompted me to take an entire class on his work. But when I did, I fell hard. His sentences rolled around in my mind, multi-tentacled with loopy vocabulary, inscrutable jokes and fierce opinions, sentences that stayed luminous whether you picked them apart like a scholar or just gobbled them up. She did not say anything like that then, of course, and I can't say I had some Nabokovian epiphany talking to her. But sometime after they led me back, something changed in how I was. One of my favorite Nabokov novels is a relatively obscure one, Invitation to a Beheading, which could almost pass for Kafka if you squint. Its clumsy hero, Cincinnatus C., finds himself in a prison both ridiculous and frightening, clearly imaginary and yet hopelessly restrictive to his person. Condemned to death, he arrives at the platform and, after the executioner tells him to count to ten, 3 mins left in chapter 22%

I regret to say that David Sedaris, once among my top five literary idols, has officially jumped the shark. I don't really recommend reading his piece in the New Yorker about his recent experience getting bitten by a dog in Portland, which is less a funny article and more a series of tired, boring complaints about people who are addicted to drugs and those defend them. Christen McCurdy's recap of Sedaris' article in Willamette Week is a much better read, with a funnier title. As McCurdy explains, Sedaris has been on this trajectory for a while, but god, it's still a bummer! David, if you're reading this, Amy has always been funnier, which I think you're aware of. You and your little Japanese culottes can remain in your English hamlet—nobody's making you come to Portland. Somehow, this is all Ira Glass' fault.
