I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

Folks, look, I don't really want to be the guy taking up the mantle on this but until this is more commonly understood I will be a little cranky about it.
If you cannot stop yourself from being triggered into a combative response before you even look at the profile of the person you're gonna reply to to maybe try and piece together even the faintest hint of context, then I don't want you in my space.

I want to be able to shut the door.

This is a great idea. Do you know anyone in Congress you can talk to?
Congress must take action to restore the rule of law.

Jasmine Crockett: "The problem is that Americans thought it was okay to take a full fledged criminal and make him the President of the US and then they want to act aghast when he does criminal things. Let me tell you, we have a thug in charge of the US and if we don't wake up we may not have a US"

Somebody yelled at me for posting about Ganymede instead of /the state of things/ last night.

I know we’re (almost) all on the same page here, but a Bluesky without cute cats, science facts, and dumb jokes would be bad for everyone.

The most useful thing I can say about [gestures broadly] is that punditry is basically the act of crafting meaning out of events, and following pundits is in many ways outsourcing your own critical thinking.

Be very careful about that.

It would hardly be a new thought to say "we need to work on our critical thinking skills" but I do think it might be worth clarifying that the *point* of critical thinking skills is to be able to create your own meaning out of the things going on in the world.

And offshore wind has an incredible capacity factor! Largely negating the whole "well, the wind doesn't always blow" angle.

This should make it plain as day that the actual reason there's a campaign against wind energy is fossil fuel interests.
The fight against offshore wind is one of the most insane things I think I've ever seen. Untapped clean energy just blowing around, out in a useless nowhere.
Trump: There's an energy emergency! We're producing more oil & gas than ever & drillers don't want to drill more. Meanwhile, we're experiencing rapid electricity demand growth. A crisis! So... Let's block the cheapest, fastest way to add new electricity supply to US grids (wind, solar, batteries).🤔🤷‍♂️

A great example of why my "stop throwing tech at everything" mantra isn't just me being a crank.

We're much too eager these days to do "what everyone else seems to be doing" before we look at simpler solutions, and it's a mindset that's literally wasting our time and money.

Now offering my free online workshop “How *not* to use ChatGPT for fun and profit.” Here’s the outline:

1. ChatGPT is bullshitting you.

2. Yes, more than you already think.

3. Yes, it’s getting worse, not better.

4. Only a fool willingly adds more bullshit to their life.

5. Don’t be a fool.
