La survivance de certains gros fruits à l'aspect extraterrestre en Amérique du Nord s’explique par un "anachronisme évolutif": autrefois dispersés par la mégafaune qui a été anéantie (mastodontes, paresseux géants), ils ont survécu dans des micro-niches avant d'être redispersés par les humains.
