What I would prefer as an operating system to run everything on before I would use ChatGPT:

* Windows 95

* Skype

* A first generation Gameboy

* An Etch A Sketch

* Printouts on Tibetan prayer flags

* Stone Tablets (And I mean pills you need to swallow!)

* The guts of a goat

* Your Mom

Not-Breaking Knot-News: @standupmaths.bsky.social proves 3+3=5 using rope, scissors and tape:

Also contains a great sentence-template more journalists should use: "Next we need to understand what X is - and, then, we can get to the breaking news"
A century-old knot conjecture was wrong all along

Math has publication fraud, too.

For a long time, mathematicians thought that as long as they keep away from predatory journals or paper mills, the problem does not affect them. This turned out to be wrong.
Math has publication fraud, too
Ilka AgricolaCredit: Thorsten Richter Scholarly publishing in mathematics is unlike many other fields, marked by fewer papers, fewer coauthors per paper and fewer citations. But that doesn’t mean t…

When a typo in the abstract makes you more likely to read the paper :-)
The picture consists of two parts:
On the top a screenshot from a paper on arxiv. The title reads "Spectral extrema of graphs of given even size forbidding H(4,3)", the abstract below starts with the following text "A graph is sad to be H-free if it does not contain H..."
Below is a handdrawn image with the title "Without H everything is sad" and a drawing of a graph resembling a sad smiley face. Next to it is an arrow pointing to it with the text "grap(h) sad"

America's captains of industry already behave as if the country were a dictatorship, so why would they be more likely to oppose the government if that government can imprison them? The CEOs won't save democracy. If anything, they'll sponsor its destruction

In geometry we call something 'generic' if there is nothing special about the situation. E.g, 3 generic points in the plane don't lie on a single straight line.

If you prove a theorem for the generic situation, you have proved it in a special case only because you disregarded the special cases. 🤯

"40h pro Woche arbeiten. Das ist doch weniger als ein Viertel! Da geht doch mehr!"
Man hört das Argument von Wirtschaftstreibenden, jetzt auch vom deutschen Kanzler. Das Missverständnis dahinter: Viel arbeiten ist in erster Linie ein Privileg - das für viele einfach außer Reichweite liegt (Thread)

UI design from hell (well, Editorial Manager - but what's the difference anyway):
Can anyone explain to me what the first check box means?
Headline: "Required Questions"
Below: "Please respond to any questions below and click Continue:"
Below that an empty checkbox, a red asterisk and the text "Please select your area of interest from the Classifications list: (1) Select one item each from "Discipline" and "Method" (2) Select up to two items from "Topics""
Below "Please click on the question below and Continue:"
Below that another empty checkbox, a red asterisk and the text "I accept the Publisher's Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy and the Aries Privacy Policy."

I wrote an op-ed on the world-class STEM research ecosystem in the United States, and how this ecosystem is now under attack on multiple fronts by the current administration: newsletter.ofthebrave.org/p/im-an-awar...
I’m an award-winning mathematician. Trump just cut my funding.
The “Mozart of Math” tried to stay out of politics. Then it came for his research.

PhD-level intelligence my ass #GPT-5
A screenshot from a chat with ChatGPT featuring a table called "summary table" with two columns: The left one is called "berry name" the right one is called "count of 'b'". In it are the following lines:
Boysenberry	2
Blackberry	1
Blueberry	1
Olallieberry	2
Chehalem berry	1
Marionberry	1
lukasmathgraf.bsky.social
Had to test it myself and am happy to report: Berry-based Turing tests still work for #GPT-5:
A screenshot from a conversation with ChatGPT: The question reads "Are there any berries that have a name with three bs?".
The answer reads "You’re looking for a berry whose name contains three letter B’s—which is quite a rare linguistic quirk! I dug around, and here's what I found:
The only real berry (i.e., a fruit) that fits that description is:
Worcesterberry – a name for Ribes divaricatum, a type of gooseberry native to the Pacific Coast of North America. Conveniently, it contains exactly three “b” characters: Worcesterberry. "

Incredible article about a bunch of children - now in their 50s and 60s - who were taught to read using a doomed alternate alphabet invented by a Tory MP www.theguardian.com/education/20...
A Ladybird easy-reading book but it's all spelled very weird, eg the easy of "easy-reeding" is two strange E letters, a backwards Z, then a y.

Usually, a single counter example isn't enough to disprove any theory about how our society works - but Elon #Musk alone should be enough to forever discredit the idea that there is any connection between being rich and being intelligent.

This is so dumb, I had to double check it's not a joke. But, no it's Google's #AI that's the joke.

To be fair, the AI did now add a source for its claim ... which is an Instagram post ridiculing this very AI summary 🤦
A screenshot from a Google search for the term "what did bob dylan weigh".
The response says: "Enthält auch Ergebnisse für what did bob dylan weight".
Then the AI summary reads "There's no official record of Bob Dylan's weight. However, based on observations of his physique in photos and videos, many fans speculate that he weighed around 6 or 7 pounds, according to a discussion on Instagram. Some people have also noted his thin build, which reinforces this idea." where the words "according to a discussion on Instagram" is a link

NYT 2028:
While it may certainly be called unorthodox to adorn the Capitol Rotunda with severed heads on spikes, the fact that not only the Democratic Caucus was decapitated, but also several Republican representatives, makes this a bipartisan symbol that could perhaps even be seen as a compromise.
