When I talk to people about the generational shift in the Irish language, how Irish people of my age came to embrace our linguistic heritage in a way that our parents typically didn't, Manchán's name is the first in my mouth. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann

In that we wouldn't have an arbitrary age barrier that has nothing to justify it, yes, for sure! As for whether it would have resulted in extra prospective candidates who would have added gravitas to proceedings… no idea :-) But presumably not worse than the exploding clown car we've witnessed.

I don't disagree, but that's not what I'm asking. In this race alone, plenty of unsuitable potential candidates have been prevented from reaching the ballot paper despite clearing the age bar, though the process still looked like a farce at times. Would it really have been any less dignified?
lukefield.ie
Is there anyone who voted against lowering the age bar for Presidential candidates in 2015 who can honestly say, hand on heart, that they believe the subsequent contests have been more dignified because of continuing the exclusion of under-35s? #spéirghorm #Áras25

Thank you to @allimcculloch.bsky.social and @jonathanarlow.bsky.social for joining me on the @psaireland.bsky.social panel today! #APSA2025

(Side note: one person using she/her pronouns, one using they/them, and one using he/him—do we get some kind of award for absolutely nailing gender balance?)

Ok but being totally fair, OG manosphereheads will know that "rightwing writer" barely scratches the surface with Forney lol

I was expecting the Reichstag Fire parallel to be made, but I did not expect it to come from the right.

"News outlets blowing on dog-whistles for all they're worth urge caution"
newschambers.bsky.social
Staggering stuff from the WSJ now trying to put the genie back in the bottle with “some sources urge caution” as if that’s not exactly what they should have exercised from the get go.

My word.
WSJ headline: Early Bulletin Said Ammunition in Kirk Shooting Engraved With Transgender, Antifascist Ideology; Some Sources Urge Caution.

Landed 30 minutes ago, still on the plane, no sign of the gate opening. I swear this airline is cursed

Incidentally, my experiences with Icelandair continue to make me miss having Aer Lingus as my residence's flag-carrier. (Real ones will understand the gravity of this statement)

En route to #APSA2025, with a flight time almost exactly matching the time difference from Iceland, so if I get any sleep on this flight it just counts as a 45-minute nap. That's how it works, right?

Trans people have been around your whole life. You’ve been sharing bathrooms with them your whole life. They’ve been in your communities your whole life. They’ve even been playing sport your whole life.

And you didn’t care *at all* till a few years ago when every right wing org decided you should

Elements of both, I think. On the latter, I think it's a mix of cynicism about "normal" electoral politics and naivety about how the Presidency and its election work. I can see how "thought leader" types might be attracted to it when they wouldn't seek a parliamentary (or council) role in a blue fit
