it's notable, with ghouls saying things like "should be a temporary hand up" to justify punitive, precarity-increasing measures, that HUD already HAS the family self-sufficiency program for s8, which (ostensibly) supports families taking steps to increase their incomes.
The rules from the Department of Housing and Urban Development would allow major changes to public housing and Section 8 vouchers:
- full-time work requirements
- 2-year time limits
- stripping aid from whole families if one member is in the country illegally

A tangential point but it is humiliating as a feminist—and a sign of the ways that endemic misogyny abridges women’s citizenship and dignity—that someone like Klein can be considered authoritatively well informed about American politics while also knowing so little about the politics of abortion.
The thing he's said about running anti-abortion Dems in red states is a great example of this, since of course deep red states have voted over & over to protect abortion rights.
He's uniquely poorly situated to talk about this insofar as the problem might be mainly social identity, not policy.

can't overstate how much requiring landlord cooperation and imposing physical quality standards undercuts Section 8, ultimately resulting in people LOSING assistance. people are esp invested in the latter, bc it FEELS like it's "helping." v useful to have actual programs to show otherwise.

HUD put out a notice of funding opportunities today for research grants that includes as one of their specific areas of interest "determining with precision" how many non-citizens are getting HUD-funded rent assistance or have fha-backed mortgages, broken down by immigration status

one of the kids who came to practically all my programs when I was at the library is in the same school district as our house is. the district mails a newsletter to all the houses monthly, and kiddo is on the front page as the valedictorian!! 😭😍

wife's sleep study got rescheduled from mid-june to tonight so now i have to sleep alone without having a week to mentally and emotionally prepare for it 😭
