-- I'm a criminal justice and public health scholar interested in the intersection of health and the criminal legal system, especially substance use, harm reduction, and reproductive justice. This year I left my tenured Assoc. Prof. position to work for a research & evaluation nonprofit. It's great!

This sounds like it covers routine care, but does it cover things like hospitalizations, surgeries, etc?

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Imagine studying a technology whose presence in the classroom is so detrimental to the development of writing and research skills (including even the will to know the sources behind claims!) that mitigating its effects becomes a central goal of course design, and concluding with tips on adopting it.

Another one of these, a Kavanaugh Arrest of a citizen. No warrant, no PC, no nothing, just racism and the power to threaten a citizen with violence, kidnap them, and return them after hours of missed work. No explanation or apology.

ICE must be abolished, but also we must fix the Court.

John Fetterman, ladies and gentlemen

Trump has been illegally bombing boats off the coast of Venezuela.

Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff forced a vote on reasserting Congress's role over war powers and ending this reckless
warmongering.

It failed 48-51.

Murkowski and Paul voted yes.

Fetterman voted no.

This might be my favorite mug I've made since starting my pottery misadventure a year ago 😍 Ooooh, the kiln giveth and the kiln taketh away.
A round-bellied mug with a turned-out lip and a high curved handle. The bottom half is a metallic copper and the top half is a sea blue-green. A round-bellied mug with a turned-out lip and a high curved handle. The bottom half is a metallic copper and the top half is a sea blue-green.

Aww, poor girlie. I get it - people used to cross the street when they saw me walking Cerb. Little did they know he was the world's most delicate hot-house flower who would crumple if you so much as looked at him harshly.😅
An imposing American Bulldog stands in a yard covered in fallen leaves. He is mostly white with dark brindle patches and wears a thick green collar. A composition of two images, each showing a white and brindle dog and a striped cat. The top photo shows the dog as a puppy, sleeping on the larger cat. The bottom photo shows the same dog fully grown, resting his head on the (much smaller) cat.

Haha, Chows also give me pause. When I think about "dogs I'm not gonna say hi to," it's gotta be like... Chows, Akita, anything looking like an Ovcharka, German Shepherds (sorry folks), and Huskie/Malamute-looking things.

"He's friendly!" Okay, well, mine's not and we're over here minding our own business, so can you call your dog? 🙄

Anytime! That author has a couple pieces on this subject, and then there's some interesting historical work out there, too, about past perceptions of the breed(s) and when, exactly, public opinion turned toward or away. Enjoy!

Oof, I so feel that. I have owned several dog-reactive dogs - no human aggression whatsoever, but very scared (& therefore reactive) toward other dogs. I know this, I take all necessary precautions, and yet our worlds are always made smaller by other "good dog" owners who let their dogs roam.

The history around bad raps for certain dog breeds is really interesting! I approach it from sociology & public health perspectives (and also experience owning and working with "bull" breeds, including temperament testing & competitions). Our view on which breeds are inherently dangerous shifts.

Director: "Something really admirable about you is that when things go wrong on a project, it only seems to make you more determined."
Me: "Yes, I am highly motivated by spite."

Also they're trying to die, like, all the time. Very creative in the "ways to die" department, are horses. They have ways to die that you can't even imagine. Did you know they can't throw up? Imagine dying of not throwing up.

this is NOTHING like the Saddle Club!

I was such a horse-crazy girl growing up but never had the opportunity to actually be around them, and then as an adult I got next to them and was like, holy shit. 😮 They're so BIG and INTIMIDATING. They could crush you like a bug! A squishy bug!

horses can SERIOUSLY injure you with their jaws - do not ever antagonize enormous animals with opinions

My grandfather was missing a finger and a half from his right hand due to it being bitten off by a horse.

they don’t want you to know how they treat prisoners because it will grieve you to know it, which is natural and human, and because of your normal human reaction you will want the system changed. It’s important to them that your natural aversion to how the system works not be engaged.
