(They/Them) Meandering geology student seeking the next adventure. Desperate to explore, forced to study. Happiest barefoot in a lake, listening to folk music, with good books, good vibes. and no sense of time. "Your focus determines your reality"

Backsliding on recovery and hoping this doesn't evolve into pneumonia again. 😬

I was brainstorming that recently and kept coming back to a bee with a pride flag abdomen! Still brainstorming!

Opened YouTube shorts and started mindlessly scrolling without processing what I was doing. 😬 Time to change Internet habits and crack open a paper book. Bad habits from being sick all summer.

The Devils Postpile in Devil's Postpile National Monument formed less than 100,000 years ago from a thick basalt lava flow that cooled slowly, creating tall, symmetrical hexagonal columns later shaped and polished by glaciers.

And when I mean covered, I mean COVERED. This is a 33-year difference between these two images of the North Fork Toutle valley.

Once the Army Corps of Engineers built the Sediment Retention Structure, the site's days were numbered.
Aerial view looking southwest over the North Fork Toutle River valley near Hoffstadt Creek. The site of Weyerhaeuser’s former Camp Baker lies below the Spirit Lake Highway, partly buried beneath sediment from the May 18, 1980 eruption. Taken July 1990. Google Earth imagery. Aerial view of the same reach of the North Fork Toutle River valley near Hoffstadt Creek. By 2023, decades of sediment accumulation have nearly erased the Camp Baker site beneath reworked volcanic deposits. Taken July 2023. Google Earth imagery.

Hard thing for us students to grasp! I was saying a few days ago that I could never be smart enough to teach this stuff!
maracox.bsky.social
Wait. Are you claiming that our professors don't possess an encyclopedic knowledge of all things geology?!

That's awesome to hear! I wonder if there will be a noticable bump in school attendance. The other questions will be how long people, on average, are on the bus there and how late it runs. Huge step in the right direction though!
