From a newspaper account of the extremely bibulous dinner that followed the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, 27 September 1825.

I like the image of George Stephenson quietly slipping out before too much fuss was made.

The next toast was "The Plough, the Loom, and the Sail, and may the Railway contribute to their prosperity," with three times three; after which the chairman gave "George Stephenson, Esq., the Company's surveyor," drank also with three times three and loud plaudits.-- (Mr. Stephenson, who had been present most of the evening, had quitted the room before his health was drank.)

It was a rare modernist moment when my parents chose them. I think one of them ended up in Edinburgh College of Art, the ESALA teaching rooms in Chambers Street, so I will enquire further in there. That late 1960s/ early 1970s dating is correct.

A plastic pattern for railings pressed into a sand mould before molten iron takes its place

four cast iron thistle finials with the sprockets of iron that ran into the moulds

a decorative iron casting that will soon have excess iron removed

Pouring molten iron from a big ladle into a smaller ladle. Blue and yellow theme to the foundry which sources iron from Russia and Ukraine.

It's a model that could be emulated across Scotland.
