Here's an article that talks about this and references that essay you were talking about, Emma, which is called "Spinoff" and is in Expanded Universe.

That's interesting. I didn't think it was about that so much, although it definitely could be. I read it more as him feeling like he needed purpose, and that the only purpose that appealed to him was being a hero. Also the weird "sex work is a perversion and am I just a gigolo?" thematic stuff.

Seriously that passage probably changed my life
(also it's kinda bonkers that he wrote a Vietnam book in *1963*)

Oh same. Even as a 12 year old I was so confused by his inability to accept the easy life, even as I was thrilled by his rejection of bourgeois goals at the beginning.

Glory Road is probably the book that I love, out of any I've ever read, that I feel the most conflicted about loving, so I'm glad I'm not the only queer who has it as their problematic fave

This is weird and potentially bad. I will say that credits often get corrected on there, and the movie did just get released today, so this could just be a hasty data entry mistake

Seeing many posts about how ICE isn't trained. That's not really the problem. The problem is what they were sent to do, not whether they're qualified to do it.

Author and filmmaker Justine Bateman on generative AI
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

Your friendship (and a few others) is the thing that happened because of Twitter and the Mavs that can't be ruined by all the bullshit that came later.

Definitely not done anything to my knowledge. Mostly he just seems curmudgeonly, but sometimes the line between "grumpy old British white man" and "maybe kinda bigoted?" is pretty thin. And there's a *very* questionable sexual assault scene in his last book that made everyone unhappy.

I have mixed feelings about Philip Pullman, but His Dark Materials is always going to have a special place in my heart for being, in his words, "a story about children learning to kill God"

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing average people that politics are unimportant and just a matter of opinion.
