hmmm I guess the primary reason is when students only begin to *discuss" the idea of occupying their own campus (never mind Lujiazui) or workers begin to discuss organising in WeChat groups, they'd be arrested or reprimanded.

Sora is not the real problem here. The real problem is that in 12, at most 24 months, there will be a Sora clone from Tencent or Alibaba that is just as good and can be run by anybody with a 5099, at which point everyone in society needs to rapidly agree to treat all digital video as fake, period.

One thing that especially sticks in my mind is that you don't even need to be far sighted to see this. You cannot build this shit without knowing that and just not caring. And I also don't think you can untangle it from the reaction against MeToo.

I do not how you even deal with this other than social norms of a strength that we have spent the last 10 years proving we can't hold onto. How are you gonna stop the most anti-social teenager in the highschool deepfaking every girl in his class into the most obscene situations he can imagine?

This stuff is plainly evil and it’s frankly comical that so many people stand to defend it from even a technical perspective under present conditions.

Your brain is seriously broken if you think traditional academia and VC tech bros are the only two options. What an absurdly false binary.

I'm going to step into the belly of the beast and say that this @himself.bsky.social take is awfully flip, and I think it's sad to see that so few people in higher education are willing to take the credibility crisis in academia seriously.

Rightly understood, the humanities and the sciences do not compete with one another, but instead are two complementary sides of the same epistemological commitment.

We are in a global war against fascism, not of our choosing, and we need to win it. That means destroying it everywhere it reigns.

the question is not "will the US take precisely the same leadership role as before." we can't. but there is no longer a stable democratic core beyond the reach of authoritarian consolidation, and if we break free of it ourselves we cannot simply retreat from the world while we return to sanity.

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

President Donald Trump is expected to fire the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia after his office was unable to find incriminating evidence of mortgage fraud against New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to sources.

Federal prosecutors in Virginia had uncovered no clear evidence to prove that James had knowingly committed mortgage fraud when she purchased a home in the state in 2023, ABC News first reported earlier this week, but Trump officials pushed U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert to nevertheless bring criminal charges against her, according to sources.

i think that if the FCC threatened to revoke ABC’s license unless it replaced Jimmy Kimmel with Kevin Hart to diversify the network, Ilya Shapiro would be able to identify the issue here

This really is the final expression of "libertarianism" as it is practiced in the US today.
Tweet from Ilya Shapiro: "Wait, is it the government that makes hiring/firing decisions at ABC?"
responding to Chris Hayes saying: "This is the most straightforward attack on free speech from state actors I've ever seen in my life and it's not even close."
